Does anyone have a Northern Tools Post Hole digger? They seem to be fairly cheap and on sale. This is not for commercial applications, and I haven't hit any rocks yet with the rental phd. How do they hold up? My nearest dealer quoted $650 with auger. He wouldn't give me the mfg.

I have one and have been using it for 2.5 years. Probably dug 300+ holes with it on 2 different tractors, no problems yet.

Who manufactures them? Does it matter? How do you store yours (pallet), or do they have stands? I am thinking a 12" or 8" augor for vineyard endposts. Your thoughts are most appreciated.

I think it is a Speeco? I'm not sure if Northern still uses that brand or not. I doubt it really matters who made it as I use if for pretty light duty stuff like planting trees & bushes, it's also help build a few decks. I've got a 9" and a 12" auger. Never been any problems with it in very hard clay soil.

As for storage, it lays on the ground. There are a lot of folks here who have built some elaborate stands, some hang them from trees, fences, etc.

I bought one from James Equipment in Sikeston,MO for $385 with a 9" auger. I didn't keep it long, it was a deal breaker on a tractor sale, but it seemed tough enough to me.

Does your auger have a slip clutch or shear pins? We hit a lot of rocks here in the northeast. I'm just curious since I'm looking to get an auger some time.

Greenline MFG. is the one I got from Northern tool with a 9" auger. Paid around $565.00 delivered. Works great and built well. Gerard

All the inexpensive post hole diggers have shear pins.

Better get a box of Grade 2 bolts. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Toby,

I also live in a rocky area, and was thinking of adding a slip slip clutch also.

In a flyer from Northern Tool they had them for about $80.00.

JD4600 with 460FEL with pallet fork and 7'6" Western Snow Plow, JD LX279, 84" KK finishing mower, 84" KK Landscape Box, 84" KK Landscape Rake, 84" KK Blade, and 72" KK Bush Hog, 7' Northern Tool Backhoe, Bri Mar 6X10 Dump Trailer, 20' Rugged Road Equipment Trailer.

The easiest way to leave a PHD is to back under a shelter, or outside out of the way, drop it down, dig it down about 2 feet, stop and unhook it standing in the ground. Be right there ready to hook up to the next time that it is needed.

I bought a Leinbach with 12" auger back in '95 for about $450. I have worn out the "cutting edge" and called Leinbach. They send me replacement for about $20.
Does not have clutch. Have not sheared the pin, yet /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I don't know how many holes I dug but I do use it to break up small plots by boring several holes close together and easing forward and back while boring.
Boy does it beat a "trench wrench" or hand operated PH digger.

I do not like the idea of leaving the unit buried in the ground. That will create rust in a hurry around my neck of the woods. Mine hangs by chain from beam under edge of the shed.

I take mine apart and store it in a corner.

2 bolts and a pin and it is in 4 pieces.
