I trying to drill some holes in some texas clay. My
drill- a 91/2" did fine except in some super hard
places. I've seen where some posters say you can
attach weight--how is this done-my top pipe curves
towards the ground?

I took some square weights I had (they used to weigh down an eletronics cabinet) and some #9 clothes line wire and wired 'em on saddle style. I have a woods 1160 PHD and the top curves over as well. Since I have that hard clay also - I plan on welding a weight bar to it sticking out over the end - then I can just use regular bench weights and add 'em as needed. Wiring 230 pounds of weight on is a bit difficult. My neighbor has a Danuser and has weights that were made for it.

One foot on each side of the three-point hitch, leaning on the PHD boom. When things get real tough, climb on out toward the gearbox. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I'M JUST KIDDING - that would not be at all safe! But I've seen it done...

The PHD at the farm has some old tractor weights tied to it but it also has about a 3" long pin welded on to it. I can't remember exactly where, I'm getting old and it's been a while since I used it, but it is up on top, on the side furthest away from the tractor and the PTO. If needed I attach a 4' cheater to it and dangle on it to help penetration. It means that you have to get off the tractor seat with the auger turning, so be very careful.

Chatcher has a good idea. Except you need to modify his suggestion to say: Let the neighbor or your son in law climb up there.

Seriously, there are a dozen ways to attach weights to a PHD curved pole. Cheapest method=rope and cement blocks. the next step up would be a couple of bolt on U brackets and pole and some fitness weights. Option 3 would be a welded bracket and some removeable weights.
