"Henro,
I think the solution is to look at the line under the POST REPLY button to the upper left of the thread. There is a line under that button that reads:

View First Unread with a little check next to it.

Click that and you will go to the place you want to be."

===== End Quote =======

Thanks for the advice Mossroad!

Guess I have proven to myself that I am not the sharpest tool in the box, by far. I can't see what to do what you advised, or where to do it.

But even more so, I don't want to bother doing something like that every time I visit a thread.

I have developed a ritual now (hope I spelled that right). I visit TBN and click on a thread, then leave and click on the same thread again. If the second time I come back to the first post in the thread previously visited, I just throw in the towel an go back outside and do tractor stuff!

No complaints here...the new TBN is giving me even more seat time!

I know we all resist change...but I think the old setup was better. I don't have time to waste reading/sorting through posts I have already seen...and I don't have any desire to have to manually check a box on every thread that I might look at, to make sure that next time I visit it I will be taken to the first unread post.

Maybe it is just me...but I find this new setup to be a thorn in my side that I would not rather deal with...

Looks like I should also edit my sig line (if that is what you call it) as the smiles and red faces don't work anymore (or so it seems...)

I thought the issue was repaired. Every time I come back to TBN now, I click on a thread and it now takes me to the first unread post in that thread since the last time I read it, just like it use to.

I take it from your post that it is not working that way for you, still?

Check this screen shot attached... do you see what I've circled?

It is taking me a while to get the hang of the new software.....
Am I doing something wrong with the "Search" function. I was trying to find old threads about homemade cabs as I lost my "saved threads" in the software transition. It throws out the word "cab" as too small, so consequently I end up trying to through in other words that I remember were in the posts....but for example when I use "cab", "ac", "noise" ...Noise is the only word kept and it gives me a whole bunch of unrelated threads...

thanks

would it be a thought to put the "News" thread at the top of the forum list rather than at the bottom?? I had never noticed it until I was trying to understand what was going on with the forum last month.

"Check this screen shot attached... do you see what I've circled?"

Mossroad, thanks for the screen shot.

Frankly it was a struggle to find this thread again. I did get back here today, somehow...

Anyway, I do not have that box on my screen and cannot find how it might be enabled. I am using FireFox, not IE, maybe that is the reason.

I appreciate your including the screen shot as it makes more sense now. IF I had that box I would check it. I would rather have the ability to check it in my personal settings so that I ALWAYS came to the last unread post though.

Anyway, I can visit using IE and will try that and see if it is a FireFox related issue...

The issue was repaired and that box doesn't appear any more. The default action is to always take you the the newest post.

I still see that box. I saw it just before I replied to you. I don't use it anymore since the issue was resolved, but it still works. Now each time I check a thread, I now go to the first new post in it since the last time I was here. That's why I thought the issue was resolved. However, Bill is still having troubles. Any suggestions for him? Logging out, clearing the cache and dumping the cookies, then logging back in, perhaps?

This is weird. I do not see that box nor the link to View First Unread.

Regarding what to do.....In all my years of reading TBN, via IE and now Firefox, I have never had to clear cache nor clear cookies.

Here's a screen shot of a new thread that I went to for the first time a couple minutes ago....

For me, if I go to a new thread I see the View First Unread box.

If I click on the text next to the box, I go to the last post in the thread (I think I do...confusing).

If I leave the thread and come back, I don't see the box anymore, and I find myself at the top of the thread, at the first post.

This is what I think I remember anyway.

(took another look before typing the following)

I just looked at a thread that I know I looked at before, but did not read. Things may have worked right on that one, as I was taken to the middle of the thread somewhere (not to the first post). ALSO, that View First Unread box + text was visable.

After checking again, I am pretty sure what is confusing to me (and perhaps others).

(and after another look...)

It seems that after viewing a thread, when I come back I am taken to the first unread post. Then if I come back to that thread again, BEFORE a new post is added to it, I am taken to the top of the thread, rather than to the bottom as used to be, and the "view first unread" text is not visable.

APPARENTLY if one looks at a thread, and is taken to the top, and the "view first unread" text is not visable, this tells you that there are no unread posts to view...

With the old software, if there were no unread POSTS you were taken to the last post in the thread. This was a more logical place to be taken to in my way of thinking and probably the root cause of my confusion.

Although I probably sound more confused than ever...in my mind I am becoming less confused...

You are correct....

If you view a thread that has new posts in it since the last time you looked at it, the little button is at the top of the thread, AND you should be automatically taken to the first new post since the last time you looked at it.

Once you look at it, however, then next time you look at that thread, if there are no new posts since the last time you looked at it, the little button is gone and you are taken to the first post in the thread, not the last one, as the old software use to do.

I liked it when it took you to the end of the thread, so you could re-read the last post and/or make a reply.

Don't have that problem here. An hour ago I was drafting a post in the 'Disk maint' thread and got a stuck keyboard that wrote nonsense - then posted it by mistake!

I got back in to edit my post several times, no problem. (But all I could do was delete the trashed part.)

I don't know what's causing that re-edit problem, it's not ocurring here.

Edit, 10 minutes later. If you see this, then editing works ok.

I have no problems editing posts numerous times (I can't spell):D .

The problem must be on your end.

The past couple of days TBN has been slower than ever loading for me. Other sites seem to be OK, but trying to navigate these forums I spend more time waiting for a page to load than reading.

This is a small point and maybe I am the only one who sees it...but...

For private messages, the symbol (little envelope) that represents a read message is a closed envelope like one would get out of his mailbox at the roadside BEFORE he opened it and read the contents.

And the symbol for for an unread message is an open envelop with contents sticking out. Like might be the case if one read the contents and put the sheets back in the envelop. Or at minimum the symbol implies the envelope was opened, closer to being read than a sealed envelope.

So if I click on the open symbol, and read the PM, afterwards the symbol changes to a closed envelope. Who seals their envelopes after opening them to read what was inside? Not me for sure, and this is so counter intuitive...

Yes...I will learn to live with it, even if I don't like it...just thought I would bring it up as I just realized that I have had a PM sitting there for about six weeks (maybe four weeks) that I did not realize was unread, since the symbol was an open envelope...
