motownbrowne, I don't think that the turbo would suck up any noticeable increase in fuel. Unless someone has had both tractors and can report that the MX5100 does in fact drink more fuel, I think that is speculation since the increase in power comes from jamming more air into the same motor for more complete combustion. As for the shutdown procedure, I wouldn't just shut down any tractor straight from running RPM to idle and then immediately to off. I'm so used to waiting to shut down big trucks and even my diesel Suburban that allowing the turbo to cool is a non-issue. The MX5100 also comes with the telescoping lower links on the 3 point for easier hookups. If the prices weren't so similar between the MX5100 and MX4700, then I'd be in search of a MX4700 first, however.

Yes, turbos force more air in, but the injectors will be set to supply more fuel as well. If it makes more power, it's going to burn more fuel, even if it's slightly more efficient.

Search for mx5100 fuel consumption. I'm not speculating, it uses more fuel.

Ok, I searched like you said. After digging into the only thread where I could find real numbers for identical situations, the difference is nearly negligible. Most MX5100 owners say their machines sip the fuel too.

Redid the math figuring both tractor engines doing the exact same amount of work. (i.e pulling the same implement at the same speed)

@ 2000 rpm with engines loaded and producing 42.9 gross hp:

mx5100 @ 2000 rpm = 2.53 gallons per hour.
mx4700 @ 2000 rpms = 2.40 gallons per hour.

@ 2700 rpm with engines loaded and producing 48.9 gross hp:

mx5100 @ 2700 rpm = 3.18 gallons per hour.
mx4700 @ 2700 rpms = 2.94 gallons per hour.

@ $3.39 a gallon that would = $0.45 to $0.81 savings per hour at these working conditions.

I was looking hard at a new mx4700 myself (2wd) with loader for an even 18k last September. The shuttle shift location on these tractors is comfotable for me. I was thinking of replacing my JD5210 collar shift with one at that time.

ok in oct of 2010 i bought a tractor set up like yours.but it had R4 tires on it.an it listed for $25,900.run it till july 2013 it had 225hrs on it.traded it in for a 7040SU hydrob shuttle 4x4 1153 fel ag tire.an i got roughly $18,500 for it.so your $27,500 is a real good price.as they list for $30,000 on kubota build your own site.

I agree the 5100 is the way to go for the money. We love ours and the turbo is a nonissue in my opinion. The few extra horses also comes in handy when brush hogging

MX5100 was a no brainer for me as well, the 3pt arms alone pay for the difference. The turbo was an added bonus, IMO a diesel just isn't a diesel without the whistle. However on the MX5100 the turbo is really only there for emissions purposes, I highly doubt it makes much difference in power or fuel consumption.

The 5100 is a tough machine. I have one at work and it gets abused by inexperienced drivers ( new clutch at 300hrs inexperienced, yea I know...) Got 900 hrs now, 600 from just last year. It does love the fuel but I haven't seen a late model tractor that don't. My old ford 2000 made fuel I think. Get what you feel is best!

The 5100 is a real man's tractor, a complete beast. I went for the gear driven, shuttle shift. More power than I know what to do with. I personally don't care for hst, but whatever works for you. You won't be disappointed with this tractor. Absolutely get loaded tires. View attachment 363850
