Re: Problems loading threads with lots of comments

Don -

I'm using PowerMacs, too, and it's been my experience that at least the older (4.xx) versions of IE for the Mac are even worse than Netscape. /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

Assuming you're gonna download the latest version, whatever that is now, let me know how it works out.

Re: Problems loading threads with lots of comments

I have IE also and have the same problem with long threads. I still think it is because of two factors. The first problem the tag that loads the thread to the newest replies. The second is all the banners being used by this site to make money. I understand that is the purpose of this site but if the banners were limited to the home page and the other pages would load faster. The only thing that could be worst is the pop up banners, if this site starts using them, I will find a new site to read.

Are you loading the all pages view of the threads, or clicking the link and letting the system take you to the most recent message?

We test on a variety of platforms and connection speeds, and while we know there will be a certain number of issues with vieweing in netscape, we haven't been able to duplicate this one in IE.

I guess I don't really know what you are saying. When I enter a group like attachments and see link called tillers as example, then i click on that and wait for the actual replies to post then read them.

I was having the problem with netscape and tried IE and had the same problem and that is taking for ever to load or not loading. One example is it will sit and in the tool bar say tring to load banner withthe name of your sever I believe it must time out then I get blank screen and done in the toolbar. When I click on the back button, the page will load or just the outline will and i will return to the list of threads for lack of a better term. Sometimes I get the same action and if I reclick the thread and wait it will load. It just seems to do this if the replies are over 20 or pictures are inserted into the replies instead of being attached.

By the way I think you do an excellant job with this site, thank You

I just tried it on IE at school where we have T1 lines and it worked great. It must be a time out issue at home where I am on a modem at 50K most of the time. IE at home did not work like this at school either. So maybe i just have to live with the non ability to read long threads or replies with in line pictures.

The most I get out of my modem at home is 28.8 kbps and I use IE. That's slow in my book. On long threads, it may take a minute or so for the page to load, but I never get any timeouts. At work we have 100MBs to the desktop and VERY big pipes coming into the facility. Upon occassion, a page may take 10 or so seconds to load - usually during the middle of the day when our Intranet is its busiest.

There may be some other factors involved with you home machine - CPU speed, RAM, data bus speed, etc. These all factor into the equation.

I have to agree that the IE does work better then Netscape with this site. It is faster. Bill wins again!!! I still like netscape better but i guess I will use IE for this site.

ddl,

It took me a long time to switch over to IE. It's been about 3 or so years. Prior to that it was either Mosaic or Netscape. Can't remember the particular version numbers, but around 98 or early 99 I moved over to the IE and will probably never go back. Netscape has lost it's edge and has not been good at supporting the newer technologies very well. Hmmm... maybe it's when Netscape was bought out by AOL (booo.... hisss.... yucky - oh forgive me, not an AOL fan). Never tried Opera so I can't comment.

I used to be a die hard Netscape fan but I switched over to IE a couple of years ago simply because it was substantially faster. I have tried Netscape a couple of different times since then but I haven't switched back.

I am using IE6 with a dial up connection (33.6K is all I can connect at) and everything on this site works well. Both before and after the recent changes.

BTW, I really like the new setup.

That reminds me...I need to call for a cable modem before 5:00pm today when their latest promotion ends.
