Just an update:

I called FC (farmers coop) yesterday and scheduled delivery @ 2.15/gal

I asked them again about who owns the tank. They said they did.

I said I have never had to pay a lease and havent had it filled for 5 years.

She said we dont charge a lease like others. Thats just how we do it:thumbsup:

I said is the price still 2.15, or do you charge more per gallon for your "leased" tanks?. She said it is still $2.15:thumbsup:

So I said what is a ballpark of my total going to be? (just to be sure there were no hidden fees).

She said ~ $700-750. They fill them to 80-85%. I currently have 15% in there. So that is 325-350 gallons @ 2.15 plus sales tax.

Spot on:thumbsup:

I also forgot to mention (and I never new this) but my propane company....central ohio farmers coop...gives the current price on their website. Currently it is @ 2.159/gal:thumbsup: Central Ohio Farmers Co-op

I have purchased tanks from them at three different properties. When I purchased the last tank this summer they said they have no rental fees. Went to owned tanks after a tenant moved out and went to a national supplier that owned the tank and transferred their name off the rental tank and got a check for the propane that was to be replaced per the lease. Found out about this when I got the bill.

That is what their price has been for awhile. Had renter move out without refilling the tank and that was the price I used on August 1st.

Central Ohio Farmers and Schilling both seem good to deal with. Heritage Co-op was getting too many fees. The national chain suppliers play too many games and want automatic fill-ups for whatever price they pull out of the air.

I would also fill-up before crops are harvested and the grain dryers fire up as wet as it is outside, this seems to influence pricing also. On edit I see you already scheduled your delivery.

Seeing this thread made me wonder what it would be for me... just bought an acreage this summer and have never filled the tank, there was about 30% in it when I bought it. Just called, and cash price is $1.84. Feel pretty good about that price, after reading other's comments on here.

Comparing the btu value of propane to gasoline and diesel that's what we should be paying.

Good Evenin LD1,
Last year I filled my 330 in Vt for $1.74 / gal...

This year $2.74, there must have been a special last year !

Tank owned by us, go figure... :confused2::)

Just topped off my leased 500 gal tank yesterday, 154 gals at $2.49, not the best price I have seen on this thread but not the worst either. This will be our 5th winter in the house and that is about what we have used in propane every year (plus 2 cords of firewood for the wood stove).

To the questions on leasing tanks...you can buy or lease. If you buy the tank you can have it filled by any vendor of your choice - you own the tank. Also you can get the best price. If you lease then you are required by your lease agreement to purchase fuel from the lessor at their lease price which is higher than the owned price. Generally they expect or sometimes require a certain among of annual usage to repay the cost of the tank plus a profit. I'm one for owning. Either way that is how the system works.

Other considerations....to the extent of your flexibility and usage, certainly call around for pricing monthly or ask for historical pricing by season because it is seasonal with house fuel as much as it is market driven. Volume also is a factor as well as when you schedule your delivery. If done on a scheduled route it is usually lowest pricing vs a trip just for you. Don't be afraid to ask for best pricing and timing.

Pricing in my area ranges from $1.99 - $2.39 depending on all of those factors.

And I only have a 120 gallon tank, so I don't think I get the best price.

Hi Bo,

Just had my small tank filled at $2.50 gallon. That is the take in price at the local Ace. Same price no matter what the tank size is.

Delivery is almost a $1.00 more with a 100 gallon min. If I change delivery company's they hit you with a "Safety Check" for around $45.00.

How are things going up north?? Weather getting nice in the Tucson area.

Apparently that is NOT how it works on my lease.

About the only thing that is right in your "description" of a lease (in my case) is having to go to FC to get the tank Filled.

There is NO annual lease fee
There is NO minimum usage
and there is NO price increase for leased vs owned

I filled up Monday this week. for $2.10 / gallon cash price.I own a 500 gallon tank and my propane supplier has the best price in my area. I am in S. Illinois about 70 miles due East of St. Louis. Since the weather has cooled down, he says everyone is filling their tanks and he has gone through several semi loads recently. He says the price will be going up.

Red Hawk propane out of brownstown maybe. I'm 12 miles north and east of Brownstown.

To clarify my comment on leasing, I did not state any direct annual lease cost. The "lease cost" is buried in the rate you pay for fuel. That is why you are required to buy fuel from that vendor. Any yes you can get a more favorable cost on fuel when you don't lease, unless your supplier has a monopoly on the market. The more rural or smaller the market the more likely that is the case. They can't lease the tank for free and stay in business if there isn't a way to make up the investment so it is only logical. I own my tank and call around for rates. Big variance in pricing and no commitment.

Their price IS the same for owned and leased tanks. Currently @ 2.15/gallon.

And I do call around to check prices. Because if it is a lot cheaper elsewhere, I have no problems telling them to come and get their tank.

Ferrell gas for customer owned tanks is 2.10
Wise Choice " " " 2.09
Consolidated Gas " " 2.35
Schilling " " " 2.15
Amerigas.....Got tired of wating on hold after 5 minutes

SO.........I am only paying 0.06/ gallon more than the CHEAPEST place around here. And only using 65 gallons a year I guess you could say they are making an extra $3.90/year on me for them owning my tank. AND, prices fluctuate. Last time around (5 years ago) Farmers coop was the cheapest by 0.10/gal.

I dont see myself rushing out and buying a tank any time soon:laughing:

Not for me, I pay $60/year to lease the tank AND an extra .10/gallon 'insurance' that covers tank/valve/regulator/whatever repairs on their tank.... but doesn't cover any propane lost from their defective tank... tell me that is not a scam ;) Of course right after I got my fill this year I started getting 'tank setting special' postcards from the other propane companies....

I switched to wood pellets to avoid spending my money with them and putting up with other BS like not being able to get them to come out on a regular basis during the winter ;) This fill I just got is the first one since 2005. Hoping natural gas will get run into my area in the next few years as some development work is going to be done in this area.

ME TOO.

I always here these ads and stuff on the radio about how the ohio-pennsylvania area are VERY RICH in natural gas, and its the way of our future and all....

I wish I could get some.

Last I checked, per BTU, it was less than half the cost of propane.

I think NAT gas (IF i remember correctly) is priced per 100cuft. and it was like 98 cents.

And 100cuft is like 102000 BTU vs propanes 92000 per gallon.

So for every $2.15 of propane, I get 92,000BTU. With NAT gas, I would get over 200,000BTU:confused2:

I buy from Heartland Gas out of Iuka, IL. I live 7 miles West of Salem, Il.

I just got my notice - 2.599 per gallon. There is a weasel word paragraph that states the price is guaranteed not to increase more than .30 over the year. It was 1.7xx last year. I own the tank.

Propane is $3.00 a gallon in Central Nevada with a senior discount. Rental on a 1000 gallon tank is $96.00/year

Well, I arrived home yesterday to a filled tank:thumbsup:

Bill on the door was 342 gallons @ 2.159/gallon + 7% tax, nothing more. No hidden suprises or anything.

And he even fixed the guage:thumbsup: It had condensation inside it and was difficult to read, but could be done, now it is crystal clear with a new guage:thumbsup:
