What you are saying sounds right but I only get ac voltage by touching the two probes. None when touching either probe to ground.

Just back from work and first job was to check AC voltage coming off the Dynamo.

Tested at 1800rpm and reading is 25.4v AC. So I assume the dynamo is ok ?

Does this now point to a regulator issue or a bad battery ?

regulator.

If your battery will sit for a few days and still read more than 12.6v its good. If it starts the tractor its good. IF the Alt is putting out greater than say 18-20v unregulated its good, the last thing is the regulator, which is the most common failed part.

I can add absolutely nothing to the advice givin all been spot on other than make sure the belt is not slipping and plus these guys know dynamos where as I know nothing about them so I can say welcome to the group! I have a good friend with a 1610 so could maybe answer some detailed questions about controls etc if the need arises he may have a manual also I can ask.

Thanks clemsonfor, I'll leave the battery standing for a couple of days and check the output.

Correct - I do have a gauge and just tested it using the method you (Winston1) and California described and the gauge did move when grounded - New sensor on order !!

The battery still reads 12.4v after a couple of days, checked the alt output again and fine, so have ordered a new regulator.
