PTO Driven Water Pump

/ PTO Driven Water Pump #21
Thre is absolutely no reason PTO driven pumps can't be driven slower for lower volume and pressure results. If you have a truly LARGE pump with fairly high HP requirements to satisfy your needs at the reduced RPM you might be asking an itsy bitsy tractor to produce significant HP at too low of an RPM (not good for tractor but doesn't hurt pump.) This would only be an issue with a LARGE pump and a very small tractor running too slow to throttle the pump way down.

I have bought roller pumps that give ratings for 540 AND 1000 RPM PTO use. I have only 540 and am always jealous of the output listed for 1000 RPM. I just buy a little more pump and get the results I want at 540, and probably longer service life with less chance of failure. (I can't say how I know this but roller pumps don't drain well or easily unless run dry briefly and will be damaged by a freeze if you leave some water in them.)
