PTO GENERATOR ADVICE

   / PTO GENERATOR ADVICE #11
well of course you have to be aware of the load... if you know you can make, say 8000 watts.. don't be stupid and hookup a 18000w draw!

Also be aware that motor starts are higher than motor runs.

I agree ^^^^^ but if we start adding common sense to these threads that will limit the need for half of the discussions. It is apparent that "hands on experience" is being replaced with "arm chair what if" discussions. It helps to have a basic understanding of electricity and physics in general to resolve these questions.

If you are using 40 amps at 220v, you better be welding something pretty thick. Otherwise, during and emergency, a well, a furnace, a microwave, a refrigerator, freeze, computers, tv and a fish tank pump are not gonna come close to that.

I was thinking they recommended 2 hp per Kw. One thing I wouldn't want to do is drag the engine down and loose frequency on the generator though it will work fine right up to the point the engine can't maintain PTO speed. AC motors get all pi$$ed off at that point and don't play well.
Not saying thermal mass isn't a plus just be aware of the load.

May have a larger tractor someday and wish the generator was larger . The oversized generator will also tolerate unbalanced loads such as 4Kw on one line and 8Kw on then other line . The 12KW generator will be tripping the breaker with 4kw and 8Kw .

Auto,

What do you want to use the generator for? You mention two examples with widely different capacities. Nobody can give you a sound recommendation with out knowing what your requirements are.

It's the same models from 2 differents seller.

IMD PTO1-2SAVR - 1kW Tractor-Driven PTO Generator with AVR (54 RPM)

IMD PTO10-2SAVR - 10kW Tractor-Driven PTO Generator w/ AVR (540 RPM) | IMD PTO 10-2S AVR

My utility it is for safety during power failure for heating system (2 x 2kw mini split heat pump),well water pump, lighting, pellet stove, refrigerator and freezer. Almost that.

I tried one of the china PTO generators from Agri Supply last year and took it back. My little JD855 with 19 PTO HP had to be run wide open to make 60 hertz under a load. It has to run pretty fast to make the 540 PTO speed but the generator wasn't showing 60 hertz at my 540 PTO setting. The gearbox was extremely noisy although I didn't see any metal come out when I drained the oil. It also puked oil out of the vent. I never loaded it to full capacity either. Back fed through 30 amp dryer outlet so had to do a fair amount of load management. I didn't see it being worthwhile and figured it would blow my tractor up if I used it long. My neighbor had one hooked to his 90 HP JD and did blow it up but he was having injector issues before he started.

Afterwords I purchased a 10KW military surplus Diesel generator and connected it properly so I can use all it's capacity. SOOOOOOOOOO much nicer to have a quiet running 1800 RPM diesel set. These things are under rated and it will run my 3.5 ton AC/heat pump while starting and running my well and all the 120 loads in the house.

Statements such as Lightweight for maximum durability or THD +/- 5% would make me suspicious.
Usually lightweight means less durability. There is no negative THD (Total Harmonic distortion). Pure sine wave has THD=0

I learned two things from your post... lol

1. DON'T buy a john deer
2. DON'T buy a "cheapo" china pto generator!
