I wanted to start a thread for real life things that I wondered if people knew the answer for. Can be anything. Hopefully people will hit the reply button with they have experience in and have an answer. Hopefully these are 1 sentence question and answers and each doesn’t need its own thread. I’ll start with mine.

1. What happens if you loan a vehicle to your relative and they get in a wreck, whose insurance pays?

2. If wreck your vehicle off road, single vehicle, do you just call your insurance to make a claim?

Loan your vehicle - it gets in a wreck. Depends upon several things. Who was at fault. Does your insurance cover others using your vehicle.

Off road accident. Does your insurance cover the vehicle while off-road. This area can get very tricky. If you are covered off-road - - what does the policy say about off-road.

Example - my policy covers only me. No one else. Great reason to NOT loan the Taco Wagon. Off-road - - mine says - - any road or trail recognized by any governmental agency.

I should add - my insurance covers the vehicle while only I am driving it.

I'll try to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge.
1) In my state the vehicle is what is insured. If my vehicle is in a wreck I'd call my insurance and they would take care of repairing or totaling the car. Same if I loaned my car to someone else and they were involved in a wreck. My insurance would pay no matter who is driving. If the driver of your car caused physical harm to another person the insurance, you and driver you loaned car to may be involved in a lawsuit.
My insurance may investigate the accident and go after the party at fault.
2) Same as #1, you would make a claim to your vehicle insurance.
or
3) if no one else was injured and you are financially able you may have your car fixed on your own dime without a claim

1. Normally your insurance pays. If they drove it all the time they should be listed as a regular driver.

2. Yes, if you get in a single vehicle accident you just make a claim.

Ok, another question

How warm, °F, should I keep a basement that isn’t used in the winter to help the main level stay warm in a cold climate?

It depends on what you mean by “help the main level stay warm.” To keep the main level from loosing ANY heat to the basement, the basement would have to be kept at the same temp as the main level. Some heat loss will occur with any difference in temp. The rate of heat loss is dependent on the difference in temp as well as the insulation value seperating the two levels.

As a practical matter though, if the basement is kept within a few degrees less than the main level, you would likely not be able to see a significant difference in the energy needed to keep the main level warm.

If you insulate the floor between 1st floor and basement, you could probably get away with 60°-65° in the basement, assuming the basement is in fact, below ground, as opposed to a "walk out" basement.

I don't think my basement gets that warm in the summer. In the coldest part of the winter I'd say it's closer to 40, yet the first floor is plenty warm. Floor's a bit cold in some rooms.

Those both sound like questions for your insurance agent. If you legitimately wreak not just tap the bumper a little bit they might want a police report.

Heat rises so keeping the basement warm helps but not that much. It’s better to put the heat in your living space.
The Second Law of Thermodynamics can be rephrased in several ways. Fundamentally, it says that heat always flows from hot objects to cold objects (unless work is exerted to make it flow the other direction).

In Ohio insurance is on vehicle typically, but you can get other drivers excluded.
insurance doesn’t require accident to be on road

Ok, level 2 question.

I have 1 shotgun, 1 rifle and 1 handgun. How many rounds of ammo for each should I have on hand for home defense? And “as many as I can afford” is not a valid answer.

How did I get elected to prevent wild fires.??

And who changed it from forest fires.??

The minimum is one round for each. I would say 50 rounds for each is a reasonable number. It’s one of those things there really isn’t a correct answer.

This is a good answer. The only thing missing is how much you need to practice with so that you are proficient with each one.

For home defense I would think the rifle would be better used as a club, after the close range weapons aren't enough.

Really depends on your order of preference.
Shotgun is low usage for me, so loaded (8 on my 12ga ) and at least 2 sets would bare min.

Handgun again depends I like to keep at least 2-3 loaded mags for every pistol and enough to reload after shooting.

Rifle need way more info to make a call, bolt hunting rifle a box or or two but for an AR/AK, I'd want a few loaded mags and enough to reload. SO a few hundred, easy. Does not take long to burn through a couple hundred plinking on my range.
22LR we shoot lot, hunt, varmit control, kill to butcher and just plinking, go through 500-1000 every 6 months or so.

I purchase like I save (dollar cost average), set an allowance buy after shooting and to gain some every time I shoot.
Called the gun/ammo fund.

Personally I have enough hunting ammo to never need to buy or reload but I do fill a new box every time I empty one.

For strictly home defense, for me a rifle is out and not a good choice. Zero rounds.
The rest is up to my wife who used to compete in cowboy pistol shoots.
Only a fool would try to break into our house if they knew how good a shot she is.

I would be there for making lots of noise with each pull of the trigger and hoping my shots made it to the target.

A couple boxes of 12 guage and 200 rounds of 9mm.

Which one will you use? For the shotgun loaded with a sidesaddle is probably the minimum. Pistol loaded mag with spare, or loaded with spare speed loader. Rifle, very hard question as we don’t know what rifle.

For discussion purposes, .30-06 bolt action rifle, .357 revolver and semi auto 12 ga.

I am asking solely regarding home defense rounds. Not for target or practice. How many should I make sure I have on hand in reserve. In this day and age?
