My car has well over 700,000 miles on it. Oil and filter change every 10,000 miles. Head and oil pan never removed. I might use a quart of oil between changes. Generally an hour or more of driving between shut offs.
whoa, mine only has 1/2 half that mileage & in same cond as yours.. curious as to vehicle, yr, & oil type used, single or multi owner. impressive

When Amsoil first hit the market, you were told that you would change the filter every 5k and top of with a fresh quart of Amsoil. They used to have a 100k warranty on the engine!
I would use a similar procedure but would change filter at 5 k and top off the oil. And at 10k, change them both. DW has a Mitsubishi that says 7.5k oil change with synthetic. That's what I follow. So it's once a year with the mileage she drives it.

Hmmm. I change mine every 2500 WITH a new filter or 1 year if it doesn't get that many miles on the truck(S). (don't drive much these days) If it were harmful I don't think I'd of ever gotten the 1.25 MILLION miles on my old Buick I had for work at the time. Or the 700k on my wife's current Ranger that was also one of my old work vehicles. I even had a Geo Metro that I gave to an old neighbor at 600k about, he's had it for 15 plus years now and tells me it's over 900k. Still maintains it how I did, original motor and never torn down. I did an experiment with 3 identical cars at one point, 1 was changed at 2k another at 2.5k and the last at 3k. 2 and 2.5k no difference in longevity, 3k and the motor failed prematurely. Prematurely to me is under 500k. I used to run small fleets. But hey, off topic :)
Change your filter every oil change, period. Some filters have no blow by if they get plugged up, some do. Now if you added a dual filter system then you can get away with rotating them out front one first. If you did that though you probably added the electric oil pump you can trigger before you start up cold. The last part really helps with vehicals not run as often. JMO.

Anyone using a toilet paper oil filter??
Many years ago a trucker told me that he was using a toilet
paper oil filter never changed the oil over 150,000 miles and
only changes the toilet paper and don't remember how many
miles on a roll

I think he was pulling your leg. I've heard of using TP as a filter on a waste oil furnace/heater, but you'd think it would disintegrate if used in a vehicle with bad results.

Plenty of people used TP filters, myself included. I believe trucks used a brand called Lubrifiner (?) with paper towel rolls in huge cannisters. I personally used single TP roll filters in what was initially designed as an oil filter, then rebranded as a air compressor filter. The brand was MotorGuard, and I used them on (3) vehicles and a tractor. Used for engine oil, transmission, and diesel fuel for many years without issue.
The roll comes out as dense as a brick when changing, and there was no disintegration of the media.
I still have one double TP roll filter setup as an offline filter, but I haven't used it in many years.

In this strategic turn-over pushing context: in the 50s, 60s and even the 70s the owners of cars were told by the dealers that in a few weeks the one-year guarantee on their car was going to end, so they better should buy a new one right away, and a big majority took again a full bank credit to buy the latest model; that is the tactics where the US car industry got big with. I never heard of anyone ever coming with the only right response: "Are your cars that bad that after just one year they start falling apart?"
Dunno where you live, but here in New England after a couple years rust was already well entrenched, even though the vehicle was otherwise OK. This continued even into the 80s.

good way of looking at that. short runs, in vehicles or tractor w/o letting engine temp help burn off condensation is a reason for more frequent oil/filter changes.

going back to my original question, basically, what's the life of an OEM oil filter in comparison to the life of syn oil recommended interval changes for your vehicle?
(given the engine's in good shape w/little oil consumption)

again, apologize for rhetorical thread, wanted to see your responses
If I was going to try and conserve resources $$$$ on serviceing equipment engines I'd be more tempted to change the filter more often and the oil every other filter change.

Why would you dump a quart of dirty oil, into a reservoir of new, clean oil by not changing the filter? You would essentially contaminate the new oil instantly.

IMO, you should ALWAYS change the oil filter when doing the oil change.

I also think that waiting until 5k miles to do oil changes is far too long, unless the miles are all interstate miles. I do mine every 2500 miles. I've done that ever since I was 16 years old, and I've NEVER had an engine problem. (now in my 70's)
Here’s my .02:

At my last job we had 226D3 cat skid steers. They spec a 500 hour oil change interval. My supervisor took a used oil sample and the lab said 600 would be fine. Most applications I’ve seen said 250 hours or so for engine oil. Heck I do 100 on my stuff to be safe. Figure 25 mph average operating speed- most of my stuff has been in the 30s- 200 hours operating time. My opinion is that a good oil will meet 250 hours of run time.

If your vehicle/equipment has an hour meter-go by that.

Oil has come a long, long way in the last 20 years IMO.

Luberfiners used a large metal cased filter cartridge. The were a bypass filter, not full flow. I was in the trucking industry for 50 years, and never saw or heard of anyone using paper towel rolls in them. besides, the cartridge sealed at the bottom, and a tube in the center carried the oil into the center of the filter and out through it. It had a T-handled retainer that screwed into the top of the tube and sealed the top of the filter. A roll of paper towels would just lay loose inside the filter housing, and not filter the oil at all.
