Reverse Osmosis Recommendations????

We took advantage of a state pilot to have our well tested for Uranium - our results showed that we are over the EPA recommended levels and we are BIG water drinkers. Recommended solution is a Reverse Osmosis System (under sink mount) for drinking and water to cook with.

I see lots of units out there. I want a high quality long lasting version easy to maintain. I would also like to mount this near the ceiling of my basement and feed the lines into the cabinet under the sink. What do you recommend and why?

We have an EcoWater system under the kitchen sink, with a spout for it. Remember to run a line to any icemaker you have. We rent it and they do the maintance. Filters are costly and need to be changed at least once a year. You will be pleasantly surprised how much better your tea and coffee will taste, and you will have clear ice-cubes. Remember that there will be a 3 gal storage tank, and it will need to be plumed to a drain line.

I've had a GE RO system that I bought from Home Depot, for 9 years. All I've done is change the filters, still on original membrane. As I recall it was only about $120 when I bought it.

Just a little caution here... RO is great but don't use a RO/DI (de ionized) that will harm your innards!

Scotty - what's this state pilot program you speak of? Uranium in your well water? You have my interest given we're around the corner from you. Perhaps we should have our well tested too. We actually have an RO that was put in our house when we first moved in. Our first well was full of everything and anything and ultimately proved to be untreatable, so we had a second well dug. That water has been good, so I let the RO go dormant after a few years. Been thinking of replacing it but just haven't pulled the trigger. Anyway, how did you get your well tested under this pilot program?

I'd test for all contaminants (herbicides, pesticides, heavy metals, radon, etc) to be sure you pick the right technology.
After you install a system, have the output tested every year or two to make sure it's working properly.

I've purchased and installed three under sink systems from waterfiltersonline. Whether you buy from them or not, their website is quite informative and eliminates any mystery. It's easy to install a unit and I have no plumbing skills. Buy the tester tool http://www.waterfiltersonline.com/water-tests.asp, track the amount of dissolved solids aggressively and change filters based on that.
