My neighbor has one of these and I just have to have one in a 22LR. North American Arms Of course the wife thinks I just want another gun. She's right of course. He let me check his out and I could put it in my front pocket and you couldn't even tell I was carrying it. You can buy a neat fold over holster for it that holds five extra rounds. North American Arms

Great concealed gun, since I often frequent Birmingham, Alabama which was just rated the 6th deadliest city in the country. The murder rate has gone through the roof.

My favorite to shoot is the S & W 686 Stainlees steel .357
It is just a little heavy to carry everyday.

If I were you I would check the ballistics and effectiveness of the .22mag versus the .22lr. There is an article about the little revolvers in a recent magazine put out (I think) by the same folks who put out Guns and Ammo. You would be surprised at the difference. I think the name of the mag is Rimfires or some such.

I had always assumed the little pocket pistols were cheap and shoddily made. I failed to make the connection with NAA. Anyhow, I bought one of the magnums this summer, and am impressed with it. If you keep in mind that it is strictly an arms-length-to-three-yards proposition, it will work fine.

Sounds good. I'll look at the Mag. I now have a Ruger P89 9MM and it is almost too large to carry concealed. I have to wear a shoulder holster, which means a jacket. With the weather here in Alabama, it's 70 today, that can get uncomfortable.

I would just feel a little better with a gun on me when I go some places in Birmingham.

I just looked at NAA website and you can buy the Magnum with a conversion kit. It comes with an extra cylinder in 22LR.

Thanks for the info.

Personally something in the 9mm or larger caliber/power range is a minimum for self defense purposes in my book. If I have to shoot someone I want them to go down with the first shot. There are numerous compact semi-auto's available that are easily concealable in the 9mm caliber range. Another thing to consider is could you shoot someone? Just because you own a gun doesn't mean you will be able to pull the trigger when the moment comes. You hesitate, they don't, your dead. If you plan on carrying you should also consider joining a gun club that offers live fire action pistol courses. More frequently than not being able to use the weapon properly is more important than how good the gun is.

I have one o fthe little NAA revolvers. My wife likes to carry it in a small zipper holster. It's actually a pretty well made gun.. nice smooth and tight action.. and like you say.. it's good for 'pointing' style aiming and not much range.. pretty much just as someone would close in to melee range.. etc.

I'd prefer .45acp or 10mm/.41 over 9mm for a defense round. More knockdown, less (over)penetration.. however.. the larger the gun.. the harder it is to carry.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you about smaller caliber weapons.. it's just that.. in an average strongarm mugging.. or knife/ improvised weapon ( beer bottle / pipe..etc ).. no matter what gun you pull out.. you will probably have the upper hand, IF you have time to use it.

First shot? Sure.. i'd like a threat to be neutralized on the first shot.. however.. I'm not going to shoot once, and then stop and wait to see if he's still closing the distance to knife me... I'm going to fire till the threat stops.. IE. the atacker stops moving toward me, or drops, or drops his weapon and retreats... untill one of those happen.. he's a threat.. and a target... And that's exactly how it was explained to me by my firearms instructor, who was a police officer / officer firearms instructor for the local sheriff's dept... IE.. keep fireing till you are no longer in danger.

If i have the room, I like to carry a sig P-230 in a leather waistband small paddle holster. It's chambered in .380 and i keep hydra-shocks in it.. though do have a spare clip of silvertips. For more discreet carry, I have a Kel-tec in .32acp.. I know.. marginal self defense.. but it's small, lightweight, and has a padded wallet holster that won't 'print'.. and.. is better tahn showing up to the knife fight unarmed.

I've got three great mouse guns that I use for backup:

Browning Auto .25ACP

SIGARMS P-232 .380

Beretta BobCat - .22LR

Target the CNS only with these and you'll be fine.

I've got two of those, LR and Mag, as well as the now "illegal" wallet holster.
How goofy is that, make a holster illegal because it conceals the firearm you're licensed to carry concealed. Go figure?????????

I don't think I'd want to be the guy who is stopped for speeding and opens his wallet holster to retrieve his driver's license for the trooper!;)
