Note, the locking standing seam we used must be placed on a solid deck, not purlins or fur strips.

Why is that? I'm learning a lot from this thread, but not all of it applies to all climates.
Are there types of locking standing seam that work with furring strips? Without looking into it, I simply figured that there was.

The project here is to put some kind of steel over the barn's asphalt shingles mostly for fire protection. The shingles are basically in good shape, only about 30 years old.

Is anything better than the heavy gauge hot-dipped galvanized corrugated roofing? I have some of that I put on the barn at our old place and it is doing fine. Had to redo the fastening a few times.
But corrugated is seriously ugly. Does anyone make corrugated roofiing with a stone overcoating?

I suspect that it is because standing seam has no corrogations, and thus very little stiffness. Standing seam has no exposed screws and is usually made up of 16" wide panels that are continuous from ridge to eave.

I guessing that it could be installed with 1x4 fur strips placed 8~12" OC. Just google standing seam metal roof images. I have seen some that are onstalled on furring strips.

Standing seam, over sheating, with ice and water shield, vented ridge, blown in ceiling insulation with heeled trusses is the route I am taking. It's cost effective and will last for a long time. Cost effective, not cheap.

Basically the same roof as we have, though we added R53 worth of insulation batts. And one part of the house structure has 6" SIP panels for the roof structure.

So does yours have heeled trusses too? I don't understand the advantage to having heeled trusses over simply building the walls higher.

The original truss roof was not heeled. In the 90s the previous owner added covered porch extensions to both eaves. The new roof deck was put on rafters and started at the ridge. This raised the exterior wall height 12" and 24" above the ceiling, essentially creating the effect of a heel truss. The original deck was trimmed back about a foot upslope from the raised wall, venting the space. The old deck at the ridge end was not vented. I plan to do that this fall.

I wish they had removed the shingles from the old deck. They just skived the new rafters at the ridge end and nailed to the old deck.

Heel trusses raise the roof deck above the top plate and ceiling to allow more effective ventilation of the attic space, and thus with proper insulation and sealing are more energy efficient.

Walls higher does not necessarily increase space between roof deck and ceiling if ceiling is applied to bottom chord of truss.

We went with standing seam steel for our hill top home. Got tired of losing shingles to the wind. The old roof had been patched multiple times by the previous owner. Got a quote for $50k for 70sq of roofing and jumped on it.

As in, $50,000 for a roofing job?

Jesus Christ. I could have a "normal" roof redone 10 times for that, which is enough to cover 150-200 years worth of time. How long are you planning on living?

Went with standing seam metal for many reasons. Insurance quote for asphalt shingles was $25k. I seriously doubt you could do 70sq of asphalt roof including 9 skylights and 900' of gutter for $5k.

I wouldn't run metal over shingles... spend a few bucks and do it right.
Agree. Take off the bad roof and do the job right. In the long run you will be better off to do the job right.

I switched from shingles to steel roof 13 years ago on the log house. 26 gauge, 40 year warranty screw thru the metal. Roof deck 1” rough sawn hardwood with 1/2” plywood on top. Stripped roof and applied 40# felt under steel.

2020 cat0 tornado over house twisted off several 1’ diameter trees 20-30’ up and broke limbs all around the house. No damage to roof. Impressed.

Torque on sealing washer screws is critical for this type of roof. New type of screws that feature a cup to prevent over driving and protection to sealing washer an improvement. Probably replace screws with the new type near the 20th year.

Cost diy with some labor and materials $5K. Got an energy tax credit for half that.

Many people switching to metal roofs particularly replacement to shingles. There are many steel roof products now. Some stone covered that look like shingles or Spanish tile.

Shingles don’t last long around here. Used to be cheap and have helped many a neighbors reroof. Not cheap anymore and don’t seem to last either.

Have 22 gauge commercial metal R-panel on the barn with purlins at 2’.

BlueMule, doesn't every home have a 2140sqft party room with dance floor, bar, and karaoke stage. And a separate 1200 sqft guest suite with indoor 4 person hot tub? I thought everone had that.....LOL

That is on top of 5BR and 3.5BA of the central part of the house.

But we bought the property for the view, and the 108x48 horse barn. The house structure needs a lot of work.

The idea behind heeled trusses is to provide for a more uniform layer of insulation. With standard trusses insulation ends up tapering down quite a bit as you get to the top plate area. It's this area that presents itself with the greatest energy losses in a ceiling. The heels also can provide for a really strong wall-to-roof connection: a new build/design I'm considering going with 10' walls and 2' truss heels, locked together with 12'x4' sheathing (starting to become more popular).

There is nothing wrong with putting a thick gauge steel roof over one layer of shingles. It provides another layer of moisture barrier and simplifies roofing installation.

Good advice if you live in a desert. Bad advice in southern Ontario with high humidity and cold climate with large temperature swings in springtime.

Putting a new metal roof over an old leaking shingled roof is a recipe for disaster and a great way to identify scammer contractors IMHO.

Metal roofing sweats under the right conditions. (humidity and temperature)
I have a shed that sweats so badly come spring that you'd think it was raining.

Air circulation is needed to evaporate that sweating.

I once re roofed a building that the contractor had placed tin directly on plywood/
That ply was black 1/2 rotted and the metal was darn close to rusted thru, and it was a mere 4-5 years old!

The ideal is spaced out furring strips over the trusses with plenty of air circulation.

We too get hot and VERY humid days with cool nights that cause the night sweats (under the roof). That was the major issue that was told to me by the roofers here 15 years ago. Instead, I went with a quality asphalt shingle so maybe the next time the metal roofers had the sweat issue figured out.....maybe.

In Texas we put the metal roof over the shingles
no problems in 20 plus years
