rough start-up

Try opening the throttle wide open, once if starts back it off slowly this seems to work everytime on the Kukje motors and also time the glow plugs to make sure that the timer is not is not to fast. Good luck

My 3035 (Kukje motor) spits, sputters and belches black smoke (just like my mother-in-law /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) on cold starts (20 deg or less). I usually just tap the throttle a little open when cranking. The last post recommending a wide open throttle got me to thinking that that might not be right. What position does everyone else set their throttle to during cold starts?

Maby I don't get it. Every diesel engine I have ever messed with had a "rough start" in cold weather. Big trucks, big pickups, dozers, all of them. Smoking, belching, bad idle, hard to crank... The colder it was, the worse it got. Plugging them in at night helped a lot.

Gee whiz, I myself have a rough start in cold weather.

These new highly computorized gasoline engines seam to start just fine in the cold. I do remember the days of carboration, chokes, points, condensers... I dreaded starting them as bad as I dreaded starting the big diesels.

Quite often we had only one shot at getting it cranked. If I messed up, it was drag out the chargers, cables, and start the charcoal, put it in a pan and slide it under the engine. Go drink some coffie.

Well, seeing as how this is the first diesel that I have ever owned and it cost me a heck of a lot of money, I dont think it is unreasonable to be asking questions like this. Especially on a forum such as this. Some of us are newbies looking to glean the wisdom of the experienced folks. Be patient.

I hold the throttle to the floor as soon as it starts I let the throttle go. (My manual states to hold the throttle all the way open on startup)

I have had great luck with starting mine in the cold. Coldest startup for me has been 4 degrees F. My 3045 has the manifold heater and not glow plugs. I wonder if this makes for a better cold startup?

I know that with gasoline it is refined differently for different times of the year for easier startup. I am not sure about Diesel. But if it is and you are using older fuel in the winter it may make it harder starting.

Yes sir they do cost a lot of money.

The last big diesels I had were the John Deere 8100. no less than 7 computors on board. Usually they ran 24 hours a day for 6 days at a time. That sunday night / monday mourning cold winter start was at times "spooky".

When the machines were not running all day, every day in cold weather, I often had the luxuary of not having to start them in the bad cold.

Cold weather is hard on everything. Starters, batteries, steel, tires, etc

Hot weather is hard on everything. Starters, batteries, tires etc.

The questions you ask are not unreasonable, and this is the best forum I have found to ask these questions.

My humbelest appoligy is offered if I seamed to be not patient.

There is no telling what kind of questions I would ask, and things I would screw up if I was dumped into your profession.

No apology necessary...:) I had my coffee and I feel better! I find the opinions on this forum really useful. I have owned gas tractors before but this diesel is something new for me. I'll take all the information I can get!

My Kukje motor belches black smoke and runs rough for at least 10 seconds on cold starts (20-30 degrees F). I have not been using the full-on throttle, so will try that next.

Opening the throttle fully seems like it would cause unnecessary start up friction. What do ya'll think.

The Branson operators manual says to put the acceleration lever to max, once the engine starts reduce to about 1500 rpm and warm up for 5 minutes
