jUST ORDERED FOR PICK UP AT aDVANCE aUTO 4 CHOCKS AND TWO JACK STANDS and then came here. Plus I'll use a inside brake pedal pusher so I should be good to go, not run away go but to get the job done safely and I'll not do it going down hill unless that's the only option. I'm trainable even at 70.:cool2::D

Picked up my L3901 at Barlows. Used a couple of jack stands I had under the rear and loaded it with no issues going a slight uphill. Had it loaded before Gary could get in and hold down brake pedal. I moved the tractor more forward on the trailer and had no swaying issues. I also drove trailer and tractor to the top of my hill without unloading at the bottom, it was raining. I aimed the truck and trailer slightly uphill and placed the jack stands under the rear and wife held the brake pedal (Maybe:D) and unloaded with no issues.
Will pick up 2 jack stands and 4 chocks at Advance Auto in a day or so and keep them in or near my truck and trailer if I ever have to move the L3901 again and maybe even loading/unloading any of my Kubotas.
Thanks all for the input and hope others learn something from my doing everything wrong and your great input also.

Also lock it in 4WD.
I always lock my pickup in 4 wd when loading the trailer, if the back wheels do come off the ground when loading the front wheels DO help hold it from running off.

You know, Vince's remark about putting the tow vehicle in 4WD reminds me that I always put the tractor in 4WD when loading/unloading too. Just seems like a better idea to me both for traction and braking, since you will know both axles contribute. That is good to know in cases where one axle may be on the ramps, and the other on the ground or trailer.

<snip>
Different tractor, 10 years experience loading and unloading tractors, different trailer, different truck and being in a hurry and not calculating my weight I did it again but not on level ground like the first and only other time I did it. <snip>

John with the frequency you used to change tractors I thought you just drove over to Barlows in the tractor every once in a while, aren't you next door ?

I just want to caution the people that use blocks or jackstands on the trailer. With jackstands and blocks, it is still possible to run into problems due to them collapsing or them falling over or slipping off. (anyone ever bend the jack on the tongue of the trailer?) I guess my thoughts are that if there is any slack in the mounting of the jackstand or if the trailer slightly moves (tractor operator hit it just a little too fast?)then there is a possibility that the jackstand will give way, and the trailer will dip, truck will go up, and the ride will begin like it did with JOHN.
As was posted a couple of times (post 17 and 23) having a ramp properly built will make things a whole lot better. The leg pictured on the ramp will allow the rear of the trailer to be supported, which will decrease the chance of the rear dipping and preventing the "ride". This is how my trailer was configured up until recently when I purchased another trailer. The new one uses sheet metal sides to support the leg that was pictured, which gives it even more support. (picture the side of the ramp with a triangle shaped side). While the latest trailer is safer, the ramps are a lot heavier. In the case I have the ones pictured in the mentioned posts, I would at least run a gusset a foot or so back to give the leg a better chance at standing in case the vehicle did move while being loaded so as to not bend the leg. The use of bottle jacks is not a good idea in my thoughts. Trailers will move, bottle jacks will tip over and things will go bad QUICKLY!
Another thing, a problem we don't have much of in Florida....lol, is what is the difference in loading down hill or up hill when the rear wheels of the towing vehicle come up off the ground? Won't the vehicle still move? Yes I realize that the momentum is going forward to help push the truck and yes I realize that ramps will dig in if the rig is trying to back up, but what about on a longer trailer (or shorter tractor?) when the load just comes up on the deck and ramps at that point might glide over the top of the ground instead of digging in.
Great post, glad JOHN is ok and hope everyone else remembers to be safe!

My rental property was about a mile down the road toward Lake Cumberland from Barlows. Sold the property last year. My home is 8 miles east of Barlows thru heavy traffic so got to trailer it.
Picked up 4 chocks and two jack stands today so ready to drive L3901 which I keep in 4wd all the time with my hillside acreage off and on the trailer if I ever have to do it again. It's a Kubota so probably won't ever have to trailer it again, Barlows picks up and delivers when I trade.:D The problem was a pinched wire on the switch for front hydraulics which was blowing the fuse, sure it's permanently fixed now. Great bunch of mechanics in his shop.

Legs on the ramps ain't the only answer. Just depends on load, trailer, and truck.

My GN has legs on the ramps. But when the weight of the load stars on the trailer, the section of trailer between the ramps and the axles......if the load is heavy enough it will raise the truck axle. BTDT. So for a heavy haul, I focus on supporting the trailer, not the ramp which can pivot about the trailer tail.

I carry a block of wood to set beneath the receiver on the back of the trailer to prevent the drive-on weight from unloading the truck tires.
