Scraper blade or box blade?

I am wanting to get one or the other but cant afford both. I do not have a lot of driveway to maintain but would like something to keep on the back of my tractor with a front end loader. I am not sure which one would give me more bang for my buck or which one would be all around more useful. Just looking for suggestions.

I have a 5' box blade that was made for compact tractors I think it weighs about 250#...I also have an old scrape blade that weighs over twice that and makes a much better counter weight when using the loader...
If you have the time to keep shopping you can probably find both used (bb and sb) for what either one would cost new...

If I could only have one it would definitely be a box blade...

6 foot wide and absolutely as heavy as you can afford. 1000lbs if you can swing it, the heavier the better when it comes to grading implements.

What MtnViewRanch said, I started with a Land Pride BB2584 then went with a HR3584 and it works so much better, right at 1100 pounds vs 600+.

Other brands make good blades too, I just have no personal experience with them.

One way to increase the versatility of a back blade is to add sideboards as someone mentioned above. I made a removable pair for mine and they have gauge wheels attached so it can be used as a land plane for leveling. I drilled a couple holes in each end of the blade and mount the sideboards with short pieces of angle iron. (2"x2"x2" approx)

I would look long and hard for a used unit before purchasing a new one. The type of unit that I am talking about will easiely run in excess of 2 grand new. Gannon is usually the best IMO, but were bought up by Woods. There are quite a few out there, most that are actually heavy enough will have a ripper bar that is either hand actuated or hydraulic actuated, but either one will be where all the ripper shanks move at the same time. Here is an example.

Almost sounds like all you really need is a counter weight. With all those car parts around it should be easy to come up with one of those pretty cheap. Or maybe a carry-all to move stuff and act as a counter weight.

Just sayin since you have no real dirt work on a steady basis.

Trust me, I know what you mean, I about cried when I wrote the check for that thing.

As mentioned, my first bb for my L5030 was the BB2584 which weighed 593 pounds and while it worked OK, it simply did not have enough weight to get the full benefit from my tractor. It looks as though the one from EverythingAttachments is even lighter and I personally wouldn't want one for that size tractor.

Several people make good box blades and my only advice is get the best you can afford. I tried Craigslist and had no luck, but if you can find a good used one, go for it. I still have my BB2584, but use it primarily as counterweight or when I have the HR3584 on our M8540.
