Scraper blade or box blade?

Thanks I get it now. I didn't know but clearly my 72" box blade is light duty. I just checked their website(farm king) and it tips out at a whopping 480#. Probably all my tractors can handle anyway @ 24HP.

If you have a box blade that is made with 1/4" steel, it then has that amount of strength. The 1/4" units are only so strong. Now if you add weight to get it up to the weight of a unit that is built with 3/8", you are now putting stresses on a unit that is built with 1/4" that has to take the stress of one that would normally be built with 3/8". It is only as strong as a 1/4" unit and when the additional stress is put on the unit from the extra weight, the 1/4" unit will eventually fail. If you need a light duty implement to work like a medium or heavy duty unit, then you need the heavier unit. They all have their proper place and uses. ;)

There are conditions where even a 1400lb blade just rides on top.

Hard ground? You'll need the rippers on a Box Blade. Need to crown a road or move dirt/gravel from one side of the road to the other (like to keep it from going into the ditch) Scraper blade. The most surprising thing I learned when I got my Box Blade was what a nice, heavy, compact rear ballast it makes for my FEL, so I don't need a rock box! That said, for my usage pattern, even though I won't give up my Box Blade, I do wish I had a scraper blade too.

You want one as wide or wider than your rear wheels, so when you are hanging the edge off the road, you dont send your tractor into the ditch (I know, that's just common sense...). I am very happy with my Buhler/FarmKing, which was less costly than the JD or Frontier, and heavier, too. Heavy is good, heavier is even better! You should have Ag (R1) tires for best ground engagement or the weight will not matter as much, then you will have to look at fluid filling, etc...to get better bite.

Well i think i found one that will work for me and its in budget at $900, its a used Cammond industrial 2C2 6' which according to their website weights 860 pounds. The only problem with it is that it has hydraulic actuated ripper teeth and i currently dont have any rear hydraulics. I am not even sure i can add them? Or how to add them if its possible.

That is a good find and would work good with your tractor. Hydraulics aren't that big of a deal, just a little money is all.

You can always replace the hydraulic cylinder with a solid bar, one for teeth up and one for teeth down. Or if you has the tools needed you can make a replacement out of two pipes, one that slides inside of the other with holes for different positions of the teeth. Just save the cylinder so if you ever do get a rear remote you can reinstall it.

I live in Canada and usually have lots of snow. I have never used a box blade on snow but suspect the scraper blade would work better. Depends on what you would use the rear implement for what woud be best. As far as a counter weight both the implements you are considering are not as good as weighted/filled tires and/or a counter weight box. The problem with the blades is the width and length they add to your tractor. They greatly limit the tractors ability to get into tight areas without hitting something.

I hate to swim against the flow but I can do more with a scraper blade then a box blade. Box blades are for people who have no idea how to move dirt or operate equipment.:stirthepot: (ducks and runs away)

Just keep runnin Mr Duck.:broom:

I wouldn't comment on others abilities if you can't use a boxblade yourself.

So what do you do when the ground is so hard that your rear blade WILL NOT dig in at all? :confused3:
