Screw Type Log Splitter

Anybody had close calls working a hydraulic splitter? I've learned not to let someone else operate the controls. My mother is a bit ambitious, about 10 years ago she nearly took my hand off!

Thanks for the link, I was wondering who made it. Got it at an auction sale a few years ago, there were 5 or so bidders interested in it to start.

I've always felt the chain saw was the most dangerous part of wood making. Helped dad with the circle saw (buzz saw) mounted on the tractor for 15 years or so - didn't like that too well either. A friend of mine had to go to the emergency room to have a piece of metal removed from his chest right over his heart - came of a wedge when he was using a maul & wedges to split wood. My unkle came real close to getting his hand in a typical hyd splitter.

Guess it's real hard to make any of it safe.

Most dangerous thing I do is feed cows 2 times a day, every day. Machines are more predictable. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Nothing that we do around machinery is 100% safe. That is why everyone should use extra caution. There have been so many accidents around PTO shafts that now they have so many guards and shields that it most near impossible to grease them. But can be done.

My son and I were splittin' wood one day. I smacked the wedge and a piece off the wedge stabbed the boy in the chest. Fortuneatly it stopped on a rib. I still get the chills thinkin' of that. He says he can still remember the heat from that shard from fourteen years ago. I worked with a guy who got smacked by a tree that slid back from the stump and caught him and paralyzed him from midback down. The easiest way out....gas pipe to the furnace. I guess all the things it takes to change a tree to firewood/mulch are extremely dangerous.

 You know they said the same thing about the Wright brothers and Henry Ford..."that thing will get you killed".

Anybody remember flat belt pulleys and the burr mills, horse drawn equipment and Oh 70 mph freeways? Life is fragile use it with care whatever you do.
