Negative tongue weight leading to high-speed sway.........my guess, anyway.

Under the picture it says this...

"No Trailer Brakes on downhill portion of road caused a Non-Injury Motor vehicle accident at Melrose and Garden Valley Roads, near Roseburg OR"

Looks like the weight just overwhelmed the truck's brakes going down hill. At that point anything could have happened. Driver panicked and swerved, pulled over to the side to try to slow down on the gravel, pulled over to the side to avoid someone in front of him, etc. Single lane road though, so if he couldn't stop and there was something in front of him, he had nowhere to go but opposing traffic lane or shoulder, and the opposing traffic lane might have been occupied too.

Agree that the caption mentioned downhill and no brakes but the photo shows totally flat land. I'm voting for negative tongue weight myself. Captions can be added way after the event and by someone who has no clue.

The cab is crunched on both sides, but not the top. It doesn't look like much of a grade. And his steering is full-lock right. I don't see the heavy abrasion you would expect from a high speed crash.

I wonder if the first time he braked - at moderate speed, and no trailer brakes - the tailheavy trailer lifted the pickup's rear axle off the pavement.

That would be a wild ride indeed.

Ok, what do you guys think of this one, is he overloaded or not? I l also like how he used some vertical logs against the sides so he could stack the wood a little higher. We also drove right by a cop looking for speeders in a 25 mph zone going out of town. The cop didn't seem to care and let him go but I was a little nervous behind him. I got around him as soon as I could.

Sorry, I can't figure out why all my pics are always sideways when I attach them.

I would say no but the left tire looks a little low. The trailer appears to be evenly loaded but the left tire is low and the right is fine.

Well, we don't know the length of the trailer bed but it appears to be wider than a typical 4x8 given the full size SUV as a reference. If it is a 5x10 single axle then being full of uncut logs stacked to at least three feet would equal just about a cord of wood. Cord of wood typically weighs 3500-4000 lbs so even if it is a 4x8 trailer stacked 3 ft the wood must weigh pretty close to 3000lbs. As the trailer must weigh at least 500-700lbs and appears to have a 3500lb axle at best, I'd say the trailer is probably overloaded. Trailer looks kind of home made too so I wonder if it has brakes.

The axle appears curved, and the springs are far inside the wheels. I would bet it is an old car or truck front axle.

Skip ahead to the 30 second mark in this video below and then hold on! Good case for sway control on loads like this one. Talk about top heavy on that trailer!

Be careful out there.

Looks like a generator perhaps? IIRC, those have a bottom mounted fuel tank and that tank was probably empty.
It looked like the axles might not have any suspension and possibly it wasn't level.

I would have expected that once the trailer was on its side it would act like a boat anchor, not push the rig to the left any more. There may be faint smoke under the pickup - I wonder if he braked hard and that's what put him sideways.

Some small suv's should never have a hitch. And the reason rental yards put a 55mph max sticker on there trailers.

Small SUVs and cars can pull just as safely as any truck with a properly sized and loaded trailer. It is all about the set up.

That's an experience issue as probably most trailer accidents are.

Sway will really scare an inexperienced tower. Just like sliding on wet pavement.
