I find that the chronic tailgaters are younger females. (though I recently had an older female driving a BMW SUV tailgate the crap out of me) Older folks in my area seem to be the ones that I get behind (though not tailgate) which results in attracting the tailgaters on MY behind!

It takes all the self control I have not to lay on the brakes with those people.

Tailgating. It's like driving a nail with your thumb next to the nail your driving. Why would you do that? I WAS stupid enough to do that with a long recycled deck screw (with a buggered head), really leaned on it with the screw gun, and just about put the robertson bit through my thumb! Excellent learning experience.

What I really don't get, is there is absolutely no benefit to tail gating and only risk. You aren't going to get there any faster!

Just saw a movie on the old P.I.E,, Pacific Intermountain Express Company of the 50s. Drivers could not exceed 50mph, had a data logger and despite tight schedules, were REQUIRED to help motorists in distress/broken down.

That company rebuilt all its own fleet down to the smallest components in their own shops. LOTS of jobs! Curious what happened to it. Maybe deregulation of the trucking industry.

But boy, how society has devolved!

Regulating some vehicles so a slower speed is stupid. Everyone going the same speed is much safer.

While I don't condone tailgating, I also don't agree with "brake checking" or any other games when driving. I had a trucker give me the high beams on the interstate as I passed him while following another pickup too closely; what he didn't see was I hadn't had time to back off after that other pickup driver pulled out and cut me off just as I was overtaking him, and I had to burn off about 10 MPH just to keep from hitting him.

I used to travel through Vermont on Sunday nights on my way to NY to work; it seems like I always was one of the few people in the travel lane while the passing lane would always be clogged, most likely by some LLB who was "driving the speed limit." We would drive for miles that way, with both lanes travelling the same speed. I could never see the benefit of driving in a pack like that, knowing that I wasn't going to get anywhere any faster.

It's all about stress. Seems that we've been conditioned to be in a state of constant stress. The tailgater will get by you only to then have to tailgate someone else. They're living their entire lives like this!

I have seen this many times. I used to work 3rd shift, driving to work at 11 at night on a 3-lane highway, no-one else on the road and some jerk needs to ride my bumper. Pull into a different lane and he zooms way up to the next car on the horizon and rides his tail. Whatever...

The other one is people getting behind a truck and getting mad because they can't see around them and the truck won't get out of their way. Hey, if you backed up two car lengths you could SEE that you have completely empty lanes to pass on either side. Nope, staying right there headlights to mudflaps getting steaming mad.

I hate the people who drive "on my shoulder" in the passing (left) lane while I drive in the driving (right) lane. They'll just sit right there next to my left rear bumper. And if I slow down hoping they'll complete the pass, they slow down too!!

Conversely, if you approach a slower car in your lane, they guy on your LR corner will pick that time to speed up and s-l-o-w-l-y go by, just as you need to change lanes.

My practice is to seek out a semi to drive behind when traffic is really squirrelly because most people don't want to be behind a truck.

I also wish that people would understand that turn "signals" are to, as I was told when learning to drive, signal your INTENTIONS. So many people are hitting them AS they change lanes. Under breath I remark that doing this is pretty stupid as it is clear that I can see that they are turning! Like applying the signal after the fact covers them from stupid and aggressive lane changes!

BAD driving:

1) Tailgating;
2) Passing on the right; (and also many lane changes);
3) Driving in someone's blind spot.

#s one and two are likely the top two causes of accidents.

This all applies to hauling/trailering as there needs to be even more caution applied in these areas.

A brake checker should get arrested for causing an accident. Because that's what happened. And they should pay for the other driver's vehicle repair.

The whole problem comes down to respecting other drivers. First you have the person in front who doesn't respect that other people want to drive at different speeds and doesn't pull over (on a multi-lane road) when the opportunity allows. Then you have the tailgater that drives too close to try to make their point and doesn't respect the other driver's choices. Eventually you end up with an accident or road rage. The key to all this is the FIRST one who was not courteous and respecting of others. Because without the first person being stubborn or a self-imposed speed cop the rest would not happen. Just accept that fact that others don't share your habits and desires and try to not be in anyone else's way or make them do something unsafe. This goes for everyone. If the people in front weren't jerks the people behind wouldn't be either, in most cases.

You are correct... but it doesn't follow that you are right. I've done "brake checks" since I've started driving; to ensure that the road isn't icy. Yet the FIRST thing that I do is check to make sure that nobody is behind me to even see my brake lights.
Driving laws are merely enforced courtesy, as my DE instructor used to say way back in 1975. Or has that changed?
Defensive driving is when you do everything that you can to avoid an accident, which is one reason why I've only wrecked once in 40+ years and about a million miles of driving. That one time was when I braked to avoid a deer. Yet some people will go to the utmost extreme to be at the front of the pack; i.e., the quickest way to get somebody to speed up is to try and get by them. I've had people pull over and straddle both lanes, or go from 45 to 80 on a truck lane to keep me from getting by.
I've even had people tell me that they will intentionally speed up to keep from getting passed. WTF? If I want to play games it can wait until I get home, and I can play in my horseshoe pit or pick up a deck of cards.

Tailgating is aggressive driving and is basically assault (if continued). Again, the case where this idiot crashed from someone brake-checking is extreme; but, that tailgater is endangering other people. Hopefully they weren't seriously hurt, but also hopeful that this has kept them from actually killing someone else. There is almost no reason to ever tailgate. At what point do people say enough? After the tailgater has managed to pull someone else into their orbit of reckless endangerment?

People do stupid things. That's one thing. But tailgating is more than stupid, it's assault.

My wife had someone pass her last winter. Road was snowy/icy. She was slowing down because there was a truck pulled off the side of the road attending to a car that had gone off the road (three guess as to why, the first two guess don't count!). The vehicle went by and immediately started fishtailing and almost crashed- they pulled out of it. Wife posted the video on a local board and got an apology from the driver (also a female). Turns out the driver wasn't able to slow down in time and had no recourse other than to steer around and pass. Obviously, they were driving TOO close!

You're going hyperbolic. A quick brake-check is NOT slamming on the brakes.

I beg to differ that paying attention to what others are doing isn't necessary. Defensive driving is all about being aware of what others are doing.

At Common Law, an intentional act by one person that creates an apprehension in another of an imminent harmful or offensive contact.

I of course agree that the point is to stay alive. If I fail to maintain a safe buffer zone I am, well, in an unsafe situation. When one is passing another vehicle and has no other lane and someone is up tailgating it's a different situation than camping in the fast lane with other available lanes to move over to as someone comes up and tailgates you.

I'm trying not to be one of the reasons this thread gets closed, which is why I deleted my post which you apparently are responding to. Yet how can you NOT consider braking because you feel that somebody is following too closely an intentional act by one person that creates an apprehension in another of an imminent harmful or offensive contact.... especially considering that that exact act resulted in the crash above? That motorist endangered not only the life of the person he perceived to be following too close; but also everybody else on that highway, who could have been caught up in the peripherial!
