Something I just thought about was a 50 HP tractor I had delivered a few years ago. The guy had it on a flatbed with a chain on the rear axle and good to go.

On the front, however, was a length of chain on each side that went from stake pocket to stake pocket and was looped over the tread of the R-1 ag tire and tightened with a chain binder. The chain was just looped over the edge of the ag tread, tightened down and that was all. All that held it was tension on the edge of the tread. I never questioned it until this AM but it sure doesn't sound like it would pass muster. It was a high quality dealer.

May be a high quality dealer, but sounds like the driver..... not so much!

I ran into this tie down job as he pulled into lumber mill. I had to snap a pic because I couldn't believe it.
Caterpillar Tie Down.jpg

This Cat was held on by 2 2" straps across sharp edges. No chains just 2 straps.

That Cat is either a Deere or a cross dresser.

IMG_20190405_084832.jpg This is a 22x24 carport on a 8x16 trailer. If you zoom in you can see the right front of it is sorta mangled from hitting all the mailboxes.

But I think the truck is dented on the right rear corner from hitting the carport post. Jon

Passed what I believe was an old Toyota Supra on today on the highway (going about 50ish) - pouring rain, piece of 12' metal roofing hanging form the hatchback. Have no idea how it was staying in the car - it had to be 8' out the back and looked like it had a string or something attaching it to the hatch which was open....
Would have loved to taken a photo but.....

Saw this guy this morning as we pulled out of the same home improvement store.

2 really tall pallets of fertilizer (?). Dunno what they were, but no strapping or tie downs of any kind. Just 2 pallets sitting on the wood flat bed.

I tried to get his attention when we were stopped at the red light, but he wouldn't take his eyes off his phone.

Oh, was able to look harder from the picture, looks like bags of mulch.

Well, they're shrink wrapped to the pallets, so probably not going anywhere. But you could drop a dime to the company since the number is right there on the side.

And have them air up the trailer tires and fix the taillight while you tell them about the unsecured load violation.

Yeah see it is wood mulch so a relatively light load but high center of gravity along with no tie downs is asking for trouble.

Even with a couple of straps over the top of one of those shrink wrap stacks they will still shift. Seen it happen several times.
