Shuttle shift - What is it?

/ Shuttle shift - What is it? #11
Bucky4,
I have the 3054XS and here is the bonehead explanation, which is what works best with me. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif When shifting the tranny from 1,2,3,4, it works like any standard transmission in a car. Meaning you can shift from one gear to the next while traveling in the same direction. Either forward or reverse. But you must use the clutch.

The shuttle shifter, going from froward to reverse you must stop before you can shift. If this had syncro you could do it while still moving. Again, you must use the clutch. For me this does not really make a difference. If you are changing directions you will have to stop anyway. Maybe for a split second but you will stop forward motion to move backwards. I had this discussion with a CHP once. I don't know if he agreed with me but it at least kept me from getting a ticket.

If this does not make any sense, I will deny I ever said it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This is not the way the shuttle shifs on my Ford 2120 and New Hollland TN75 work. In both of those you can just pull the column mounted lever from forward to reverse or vise versa at any speed. On the 2120 I suggest letting up on the throttle, On the TN with electro hydro shuttle, the shift at any speed is smooth as silk. On the TN to change ranges you need to be stopped and use the clutch. To shift 1,2,3,4 you can shift while moving like most any normal trucks.

Hey Bucky, you're close to Henro. I think he's got one of each transmission style in his various tractors. Maybe he'll let you demo some

Nope...both Kubotas are HST...but I am ALWAYS happy to meet other tbn memebers... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Andy,
Have you just flicked the shuttle from F/R while at road speeds?

I haven't tried it with my Kubota M6800 that has the hydraulic shuttle. I'd guess that you'd better be wearing your seatbelt if you didn't want to go flying up over the hood. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The Kubota manual notes:
( IMPORTANT: The hydraulic-shuttle lever may be shifted while the tractor is moving slowly. )

Basically, if you are operating any faster than LOW range, I figure I'll be doing the good old Clutch-Brake-Shift. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My dealer told me I can use the shuttle shift on my 2120 at any speed. He said the tractor will just gradually slow down and reverse direction. I haven't gone crazy with it but I always leave the throttle alone when shifting. It is a gradual shift and seems ok. The only time it seems sudden or jerky is the first few shifts when cold.

that is the wisest course to follow. seems like the term SHUTTLE SHIFT is a little different with different name brands.

( Hydros are just as good, but it's too weird for me to have the brakes on the left. )

just wondering, what tractor were u looking at that was hst and had brakes on the left? that would defenitly be hard to get used to /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif my b2400 hst has the brakes on the right.

The green ones had the brakes on the left. I often use the brakes to turn and I can't figure out how you use them on the Kubotas (brakes on the right) and still keep a forward momentum? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
