Skidding Winches

Maybe once you winch it closer, your tractor can pull it a bit closer yet, for a better second pull?

Eggs- Actly!

Lots of ways, but how to link two wire ropes? ;-)

Doesn't that tractor have any brakes??? They should have been set!

This IMT is a MF35 license build, so brakes are more of a theoretical thing when you are going backwards.

What is the best way to attach an "extension" to the haul line.

Say one is running 125 feet on a 225" capacity spool, and carrying a loose coil of wire rope another 150" long. The hitch to be brought in is on the far side of a wet spot (semi frozen, but unsure if it would hold)

Just put a choker chain between the end sliders?

Is there a better way?

Just put a choker chain between the end sliders?< After reading and trying to picture the situation, that sounds like the best way to me. My winch holds 125' max, it's cut it back 100' now, plenty for what I do. I assuming the 225" and 150" is that you meant feet, and so how is one getting the 125+150=275' of 3/8" cable across the the semi wet spot if the tractor cant go there? that sounds like a lot weight for me to carry more then 10 feet, might be a job for an ATV with tracks.

Then block the rear wheels with chocks, like the guys with wreckers do. They work really well....

The blade stops it much better, I often does the same and let the tractor move with the movment og the winch.

Does that mean my L3400 is a licence build too, and would be great in the theater as in a, get the log out movie, because my brakes work? How much money do I get for making this movie..........

The spot has some steep slopes around, and runs a spring. The surface ices over during a cold spell. Enough to walk on. but I fell right through with the tractor wheels last time up there.

So the line can just be hauled out by hand. just like usual, only twice as far. Might not be such a pleasant walk if the log drags a furrow through the ice and into the mud ;-)

I used my winch yesterday skidding some downed logs out of timber near a power easement. After one lengthy pull, I noticed the middle of my wire rope had a curly section (like on a phone handset). I tried dragging it without a load and with a load and it didn't go away.
Will this correct itself over time -- or is my cable damaged?

Damaged? I guess you could say that.... BUT, it's not going to hurt anything to keep using it.

HARD pulls may straighten it out in time, but probably not to 100%...

Like SR said. You probably pulled it around a very tight turn or tried to use a slider for a pulley on to sharp an angle, don't ask how I know. You could lay the cable out and hook to a stump then winch it in tight to stretch it and leave it over night. Might help. Usually you get some broken wires and it will eventually break in that curly-cue. so be careful of it. Cables curl up like a Christmas ribbon when you draw it around a scissors blade.
