Never mind the pond, I want to see more pics of those beams!!!!! You are building my dream house.

Eddie
Stumps coming out now. Thanks Eddie it's our dream house too. I was able to use our oak and cherry trees we took off the property for some of the posts and knee braces. Give me a few hours and I will put up some pics of the house. Here is a panoramic of the back yard pond I just took.

As promised, here are some photos of the Douglas fir mortise and tennon trusses and some interior shots of the house. We are very fortunate to be able to build this but I can honestly say the pond project was a lot more exciting.

Fantastic pics!!!! I envy you and where you are in life. Exciting times for sure :) Is the porch roof a half circle? I'm planning on tearing down my 9x12 porch and creating a half circle porch that goes out at least 16 feet next year.

Looks like you have the perfect setting for an amazing pond with an incredible view.

Thanks Eddie, yes porch is half circle. Let me know when you get close to building it and I will show you my builders secret to matching the roof line perfectly to the porch's half circle........if you are putting on a roof.

Todd, very impressive projects, both the house and the pond! I just came upon this thread, so started at the beginning with your initial post, asking for advice on a small pond! Interesting to see how it's evolved just since February. :) With so many of us enjoying this thread, you do realize that you must plan on having a big house and pond warming when you're farther along. Especially for your Eastern neighbors.

Your place is looking great! The pond site looks so much larger than what you first drew on your earliest photos. Thanks for sharing.

Yes it has more than doubled in size, I got some advice from someone that said " make it as big as you can". ....and we did.

I forgot to mention one of the best parts of the pond build. The timber Co. Sold the logs for $13,700. Of course I only got half, but that was a nice bonus.

This is great. Just want I'm trying to figure out for when I do mine. I have a gable end, so it will just come out of the flat wall of the house. What did your builder use to create his beam? I can see OSB with lumber sandwiched between it. I was thinking of just ripping OSB into 11 inch strips and laminating them together to build a beam, but would prefer to copy a design that works instead of thinking up something new.

The builder took 1 strip of 12" OSB and bent it around the outside radius of the porch. He then attached several 12" 2x4s running perpendicular to the OSB. After all of the little 2x4s were on, he then bent another piece of OSB on the other side. So its basically a bunch of little 2x4s sandwiched between two pieces of OSB. Make sense?

Once it was built they just hoisted it straight up, put in temporary supports and built the roof to flow with the house. In your case I think you could just extend your gable end on out and have it go into a curve (unless your gable end is two story). You at this point could leave it open underneath the curve and have a round vaulted ceiling.

I chose not to vault the ceiling.

Hit a seam of sand/water perpendicular to the dam going right underneath it. The seam is about 4' thick and we are in the process of removing the sand around the dam and trucking it out. Let the cost over runs begin.

That goes for barns too!

What an incredible build. You and jk96 have beautiful homes. Thanks for posting. Will be watching.

Great looking house and {soon to be} pond. Can't wait to see the pond finished and you stocking it with fish.
