Rest in Peace
the Susquehanna Valley area
Roy, are you near the south end or north end of that river. I spent about 4 months at the north end of it in Pennsylvania in 1993; starting about 4/18/93. I did a gas leakage survey there in Waverly, NY, South Waverly, PA, Sayre (the gas company office was in Sayre), Athens, Milan, Ulster, and Towanda. Those were the finest, friendliest people we found in all our travels. And that Spring, the river was flooding, they were pumping water out of the school basement, everyone was late planting crops, etc. They said they normally had fresh sweet corn (roasting ears) for July 4, but that year it was the middle of July before there was any at all. In fact, the 5th of June I sent a letter to my parents and mentioned the corn was only 4 or 5" high. However, before we left there, we had plenty of very good corn.
When doing gas leakage surveys, when a grade one leak is found, the gas company has to come and work on it immediately and continuously until it's either fixed or fixed so it's a lower grade. When I called one in, I usually expected someone there within an hour, although I have waited on them to respond as much as two hours. Thirty to forty-five minutes was common. But NOT the gas company in Sayre! One time, it took nearly 15 minutes for someone to respond and the guy got out of the truck apologizing for being so far off and taking so long. Usually they were there in 5 to 10 minutes. And everyone at the gas company, from the secretaries to the manager, treated me like I was family from the day I arrived.
