Starlink

I had a second StarLink issue during a recent thunderstorm besides losing service for a few minutes possibly (?) due to heavy rain. My power & lights flickered a few times rapidly and this apparently caused the StarLink router to do a factory reset. I purchased a 600 VA UPS to prevent this in the future. Still pretty pleased with StarLink.

If the starlink internet is cheaper I will drop cable internet service
If you have access to reliable cable Internet I'm not sure why you would choose Starlink. Starlink is great but it does involve an up-front investment and the requirement to install it, typically on a roof. Which does involve a risk of lightning strike or other potential issues. It's a game changer for rural users who have no other options (or only things like cell hotspots or point-to-point wireless ISP) but I'd still use cable Internet if I had access.

Same here if cable were available. I did have two cable modems and two wired PC’s fried on different occasions when I was on cable years ago so cable is not immune to power spikes/lightening. I was slow to discover (duh on me) that the ground wire at the cable entrance panel had been cut during a siding replacement. $50 month then for 50 MB service vs StarLink‘s current $110.

We had a bit of an outage with starlink. An absolute deluge of slushy rain took it down for a few minutes. Left around an inch and a half of sloppy snowish like stuff on the ground.

I seemed to lose Starlink for a few miutes this morning.
A windows update occurred at the same time so I could not
determine what caused the outage.

A recap of my starlink adventure:

Ordered dish: Feb 2021
Notified that I could buy dish: Feb 2022
Paid for dish and ordered ethernet
adapter and roof mount: Feb 2022
Rec'd 2nd generation dish: Feb 2022
Started service (wifi): late Feb 2022
Received ethernet adapter: mid Mar 2022
Received roof mount: Apr 2022
Put into full sevice with wired and Wifi: Apr 2022

Prior to the Starlink commissioning, I used century-link DSL. At first
I was told I had 10mbs up/1mbs down. After a couple years, this was
"dumbed-down" to 8up/1down. Real best test speeds were (+/-) 6mbs/.5.
This service was often less than reliable and often had buffering when
streaming. We had no cable available and I had tried satellite when we
first moved out here, and that was a no go, buggy and undependable.

As the system stands, it has multiple devices including 4 ubiquity
access points, 3 garage door operators, phones, laptops, a watch,
ethernet switches, electrical and solar monitoring hardware. The
network will usually show 16 wired and wifi devices at most times.
The network covers the home and 2 garages.

The dish seems to be working great most of the time.

There was an outage this morning but I cannot figure if it was
starlink related or due to a Windows update event. Go figure.

Speeds tested after the outage (and a restart) were 280up/19down at 5am cst.
Speeds now, 10:40 am cst, are 156up/7.4down.

I am fairly happy with performance of the service. There have been fits
and starts, perplexing co-ordination issues with some devices, and some
outages. The dish has a nearly unobstructed view with minimal tree branches
to the west.

Although the dish is more expensive, it appears to be performing well and
it seems to handle streaming well. I don't watch any programs but others
in the house do.

Until any other hi-speed choices appear this will work for us.

Look in the Starlink app. It will tell you about outages (under Stats section, Outages button). That will confirm whether it was SL or your PC.
