Just start the tractor and drive it out. It doesn't hurt you and won't hurt them if you don't just let it sit there and run. No different than a pet being in a normal garage. Diesels put out less Carbon Monoxide than gasoline engines. Even though birds are more sensitive to the CO than people, it would still take considerable time to accumulate to a hazardous concentration. As for up in the rafters, CO is heavier than air so it won't hang up there.

I have to start/run in my garage all the time. I just keep the door open. No way to avoid running for a few minutes while I attach/drop the FEL and BH.
I just try to keep it to a minimum.

Not with the engine off !!

I'd want to shut it off and push her in.

Maybe I'll have to extend the ramp a bit so that it's level just outside the door for 4 feet or so.

Sorry. I was thinking it would be while driving it.

Exactly.
So no preblem with starting it to drive it in or out .
So do it the easy and fire it up.

But I would get the birds out of there or find other shelter for the tractor.

One way to do that is start er up close the door and leave er run a couple of hours. Duck Goose duck goose BOING

Regardless of whether you need this to start up or not, a block heater, by pre-warming the block, will give you far more complete fuel oxidation on those first few strokes. Incomplete oxidation of fuel creates carbon monoxide and other toxic compounds. The pre-heated block will produce far more completely oxydized exhaust, primarily corbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide in itself is not poisionous. Assuming that all fuel is 100% oxydized, the danger comes in that in an enclosed space, all the oxygen in the room is consumed and no oxygen is left to breath, so you'd still want to ventilate a space. Also, a pre-heated engine will enable you to drive the tractor out of the building more quickly. I didn't really need a block heater for startup, but I put one in for these very reasons.

Thanks for the techno tips. Even when starting at 20F it took a good 5 minutes+ to warm up. I wait till I see the temp needle rise to like the first mark (25% of it's range I think). The door opening is not that big (5 feet) and it did get kinda fumey. Also I did try pushing it with bucket up, brake off and in neutral and I could barely move it.

So'll be looking around for a good steel flex hose.

perhaps installation of a ridge vent in the structure would help with fresh air all the time and the mini jet fighters may relly enjoy it more certainly it would eliminate capture of lighter than air fumes

I wouldn't take a chance fiddling with the roof. They have been living in there for like a 100 years and happy with it. It's a very old structure I would not want to fiddle with. Also the wind howls accross it on a pretty regular basis. I'd be worried rain and snow would drive itself in a ridge vent. There may be 3 feet of snow on the ground and usually not a flake on the roof. Also as someone mentioned the fumes don't go up.
