Possibly bad news Roger...that 40 psf rating is definitely referring to the TOP of the roof, not the lower stringers. I work next door to Tandell Truss. The trusses they build with storage capacity ALL have much heavier lower stringers. From your pictures, yours have 2x4s. Don't put anything heavy up there. You shouldn't have any trouble with your own weight while putting things up & down tho...(unless you're too overweight to have helped install those trusses...;) )

I wouldn't use OSB for that (light) storage area. In my shop, I've put small sections (2' x 4') of 1/2" ply in strategic places for storage. But then, my ceiling is way too low. I can chin myself up to reach things.

Roger I am a little luckier than you because my next door neighbor owns a company that builds trusses. It is easy to get questions answered when you do that. also the price I hope tends to get a bit better. I payed 60 dollars per truss. I hope if you payed a lot less than that you dont tell me I am so happy thinking I got a good deal.

I know what you mean about seeing it with the trusses up it finally makes me think now I wil have a garage. I have been wanting one for years and years this is like a dream come true. I actually got a stroke of good luck. My neighbor that owns the truss company has a handyman working on his farm. I was talking with him today and mentioned that work was slowing down because none of us like to be on the roof that high laying decking. He told me he loved to deck. When I asked him what he charged he told me ten dollars an hour. I hired him on the spot. If i can get my deck put in place without me going up on that roof again for 100.00 I will be a very happy camper.

I also read what the previous poster said about the load. My neighbor told me that if i wanted to have the ability to store stuff like having a room up there he could do that but it would involve having trusses with 2 x 6 and would raise the cost to over tripple. I already have a lot of storage in my house and i have a 16 x 20 storage shed I built. so I went with the lighter duty trusses

2nd day in a row I am rained out. Now my side yard is muddy again and I need to get 42 sheet of 4x8 1/2 but the truck can not get up to the garage. I will go and load my trailer up with the sheets so they will be here over the xmas break. The lumber yard is closed tomorrow so I will have to get them myself. All in all I have been lucky with the weather. Will it hurt to have the sheets out in the weather for a day or two, or should I buy some plastic to cover it up until the sun shines.

Rain Rain go a way come again some other day.

You shouldn't have any problems with the plywood left out in the rain for a few weeks. Homes get rained on all the time during construction and I've never heard of the plywood or osb going bad if the home is sealed up in a timely manner.

I did see one house where the guy was doing it all himself on weekends and hand tools. He's been working on it for years and it was still exposed plywood. Do you know how long it takes to cut a sheet of plywood with a hand saw? hahaha He lived down the street from a buddy and for about three years, he'd be out there with his hand saw and a piece of plywood on the saw horses cutting away!!! hahaha

Anyway, in his case, he had plywood peeling and warping on his home, but I don't expect you to have any problems at all. If something does come up and you find it impossible to get it sealed in before winter hits, or the wood will be exposed for months at a time, then you will need to cover it with some tarps.

Good luck,
Eddie

Roger are you using plywood or orientated strand board (OSB) I am under the impression but I might be wrong that OSB is made with water resistant glue and can withstand some water. I dont believe that plywood is made the same way and it cannot withstand getting wet as well. Either way I would go ahead and cover the decking with plastic at least while it is on the trailer. I had a rainstorm yesterday and got the decking that I had up wet but I had the stuff still in the pile covered. Today in sunny arkansas it was high 50s and we got one half of the garage decked and the roofing shingles delivered. Tomorrow the roofer shows up I am going to have him roof one half of the garage while we finish tying the two roof lines together and decking. If we have a good day tomorrow by saturday night I will have my garage totally dried in. :) :)

I bought 40 squares of shingles. So I should keep the roofer busy. I decided while I was adding the garage on that I am going to add the new front porch I have been wanting for 15 years. Since I am going to go to all that work I just decided to rip all the shingles off of the house ( They are 18 years old ) and just put new ones in everywhere. That way I wont have to worry about color match.

gemini: if you get finished stop my my house and bring your guy too. I can use the help. You sound like you have it under control. I too am going to roof the house that roof is 20 years old and showing wear. But I will wait for better weather. I will store the shingles for that in my new garage. The rain is to stop tomorrow morning. I hope to have the 2x6 up on the end of the truesses by noon and maybe 10 or 15 sheets on by dark. I am doing this on my own, not sure how I will get the 4x8 up on the roof by myself. Thinking of sliding them up on my two leg latter. Putting nails at the edge to hold one side until I get the other squared up. Any hints on who to get started.

Good luck and be careful.

I know this one learned how to do it this week. You will love it.

Take two 2 x4 and lean them against the roof from the ground with just 3 or 4 inches over the roof. Take a rope and a C clamp tie the rope to the C clamp lean the 4x8 against the 2x4 clamp c clamp on to the top of the 4x 8 pull to the roof release c clamp repeat.

I have half of my garage roofed. We have to finish the decking and then tie it to the house tomorrow and then will finish the rest of the garage and house roofing next week starting tuesday

Well two days of progress and reality checks:

Tuesday we placed and set the trusses then Friday we built the rakes and put up the fascia broads.

After that I said I could handle the rest and the brother in-law job was done. Well not really. He help me set the rakes but he told me to go around all of them this morning and put in more nails, he was there to get me going, he had his own garage he is building at the same time, so he is there to help out on the harder things.

This morning I could not get the hang of sitting on the outer gable and leaning over to nail. It is two foot reach out in space. He came over and stood on the rake and bent over and did the nailing. Not me I would fall off from the thought.

Once that was done he asked lets see you get one sheet up and set on your own. 10 feet up, and ½ osb. Well not. I could not handle it tried a later tried slipping them up from the ground. Well he took pity on me. I cut and packed them he drop and nailed the corner. So tomorrow I will chalk lines and start nailing.

We put up 42 sheets in 3 ½ hours. It was a made rush cut carry and lift, place and nail.

So once again I found out I am not a framer. Or not a framer up on trusses. I built the walls not trouble I could walk around on the wall setting up the trusses but ask me to bend over and out on a 2x4 forget.

The picture of the roof that looks like it is at ground level is from the back of the garage that is dug into the hill.

Well I will soon be doing the boxing and back filling. I hope to have it roofed by next Saturday, have to work Tuesday- Friday.

Gemini, sounds like you are coming along.

Roger

Roger,

Nice job. The framing looks really nice and the decking is great. Did you put clips in between the sheets to keep them seperated? Sometimes it's hard to see in the pictures if you did or not.

I forget if you mentioned what your using for siding? I'm also wondering about the soffit under your eves at the end?

The reason I'm asking is the space between you purlines that create your the overhang do not have any blocking. It's not a structural thing, but it sure helps with putting up siding. If you are going to cover those purlins with something, than that space wont matter as the sideing will end flush with the soffit.

Any chance you're going to take a day off for Christmas? hahahaha

Well its 3:00 in the morning, slept for 2 two houea and woke up with camps in the legs and back could not sleep. Might have something to do with that darn garage. When I started this project at night my hands were so sore I had a hard time typing, After todays work they were fine, got them in shape now only if my back, calfs and left foot would toughen up I might be in good shape.

Eddie, yeap we put a clip on every 2 foot,

Glad you asked about the blocking, I am going to brick the front up to the gable then us vinyl siding there and the eves. Maybe brick the other side with the most exsposed wood and the rest will have siding So are you saying I need to block it to help run the siding so it will not sag.

Again folks like you and the rest are why I love this site, plus it gives ya something to do when you can sleep.
