Storing tractor and implements outside or under a roof?

The Kubota BX25D-1 stays in the two-car attached garage, by the old lady's Escape. When I bought this house, I insisted on a two-car attached garage. Nine days after moving in, bought a pickup that doesn't fit. FML.

Implements and attachments (other than FEL, BH, and MMM) are on pallets and on the old pool pad (cracked concrete pad), in the back yard. I live in town, on less than half an acre.

Machines stay inside, implements outside. I wish I had covered storage for them also.

Just as an aside...
Last year I purchased a gallon of Aerospace 303 UV inhibitor...
I apply it to my tractor and trailer tires once a year...

My garage is part of my basement, so I store all of my tractor stuff in the basement. I don't want things setting outside getting weathered if I don't have too. Besides, my GSD security system can keep an eye on everything for me there too. That's "German Shepherd Dog" system for those who don't know, LOL. Eventually I'll put up another shed or garage to keep all my stuff but the basement will do for now. Definitely keeping things inside one way or another.

When I was 6 years old my dad started up the GSD security system. Very effective for screening purposes, if you were not a direct family member you could not enter the house, period. Later when my older sisters boyfriend was there we still had to be careful even after 4 years. That would be scary today, easy to get sued.

Don't get me wrong - if I had the facilities(like Cat fever) all my implements would be under cover also.

Thanks for the heads up on the crusher run Bspeedy. It makes sense that the dust would be problematic. I know concrete is the best option, but I don't spend a lot of time at the remote cabin so I'm having a hard time convincing myself to spend the $$$'s. That's always an option at a later date.

Sorry for the late reply;
While there is some dust with the crusher fines it is far better than the 4" of dust I had prior to putting the fines in there. I did not want concrete due to it always needing to be swept and the cost of it.
If you wet it good and pack it down it is pretty darn hard.

Lynn, every time I see pics of your property, I get jealous. Just beautiful.

It looks like you have a combination of concrete and gravel in your equipment storage area. Correct? Is the gravel crusher run? I am going to put gravel in a dirt floor pole barn I use for equipment storage. I have debated in my mind about whether to use crusher run or maybe 3/4 clean gravel. I am thinking that if i use crusher run and wet it down a few times, it will pack nicely and work well. Any suggestions by you or others would be welcomed.

Thanks;
Of course, I take pictures when it looks best. If you saw my place now you'd be saying "man you live in a desert"! :laughing:

I agree with these folks, Out of the weather is best. My thoughts on Carports and such. These are fine but you may want to store equipment on heavy plastic or tarps. Keeping the weather off the top of the Tools is important but so is keeping moisture from coming up from the ground and keeping the bottom of the tools 'wet'

I think most everybody would prefer indoor storage but you know how that goes......... I have all my outside implements on pallets but there isn't enough ground moisture, here right now, to squeeze a cup of water out of an acre of my land. Right now the outside relative humidity is 11% and it will probably raise to 15% this evening.

I have to pour water on the grounding rod for my electric fence because the ground is so dry the fence will not work.

I was just talking to a friend bemoaning the fact that he doesn't have a big she'd and had to replace 2 dry rotted tires this hay season. I had the thought to just paint the tires. Think it would work?

Better have a flexible paint when dried. He could just place some plywood between the tire and the sun.:)

I thought I could fool some. I'm only about 60 miles from the Bonneville Salt Flats. It's pretty much desert all around me.:eek:

30 years ago I worked for a while staying in SLC and commuting out to Skull Valley. Didn't see much but desert? It had its own beauty to it but most of the time it was pretty brown.

And keeping with the OP's question, that is why it's so important to have a shelter of some sort for all the equipment you own. Personally I hate seeing nice equipment just sitting out in the weather day in and day out.

My 'fleet' is expanding with: Case IH tractor, topper mower, Craftsman LT2000, Mitsubishi Animal L200 and several trailers. Nothing is under cover and hasn't been for a couple of years. Reading all your comments I guess I seriously need to arrange shelter, at least a carport as a starter, if I want my equipment to last. My problem is mostly rain and wet conditions - we don't have much of a sunshine problem in the UK!!!

The only waterproof machines in UK are the submarines boyo. Build a shelter that allows air-flow added to rain protection.

I had a 30'x24' shop built to store tractor and its attachments. Shop is air conditioned and heated. Also have enough room to do other things.
