Brought it in to the hydraulics shop today. They say the nick is not a problem except that it will leak when that nick sits directly on the seal, but since that should be momentary it's probably not worth buying a new ram at $150. They will try to press out/drill out these extrodinarilly stuck pins and will repack the cylindars after smoothing the nicks so it won't tear the new seals, will also bead blast and repaint. Cost: $130/cylindar or $260 to have them "good as new" (sorta).

After all this aggrivation, I said "sure".
Good choice! Good hyd shop [truth not bs]. Dont lose track of these guys!

Thanks to all for this long oddesy. finally got up to Baltimore to pick up the hydraulics and the pleasent surprise was that the bill was only $180 total. Two cylindars repacked and the pin knocked outa the housing, hooray.

Now, before my re-install of these swing cylindars I was told by the previous owner that there's a "bad bushing" in the main pivot. I suppose this will require further disassembly to try and figure it out.

By the way, I went and bought a sandblaster in the hopes of doing a steady piece-by-piece repaint of this backhoe, loader and the tractor itself. I now see that without a blast chamber I am going to loose lotsa $ in grit by just blasting stuff in my driveway.

The architechts have finished the preliminary conceptual drawings of my rear addition and the county has approved the plat, so my cheif justification for buying the tractor ("I can do that excavation myself and save lots of money.") is near at hand. Perhaps the re-paint should wait until after all that work is done......

Pics to follow as I tear into the thing....

Oh, by the way, on the repacked cylindars it is now impossible to move the ram in and out by hand. I am told this is because of the tight seal the new seals make against the cylindar wall, and that once filled with fluid all will be well. Any confirmation of this from y'all?

When I installed new top'n tilt cylinders, they couldn't be budged at all by hand. Hooked them up and they work exactly like they are intended.
