Mark, I have been looking at that pump also. I was wondering if the reservoir is big enough for a 4"x24"cyl. I also wondered how slow it would raise. I the calculators I used are correct it would take 60 sec. to raise and 40sec to lower. That is awfully slow.
Bill
If you are using a double acting 4"x24" cylinder with a 2" rod connected to a double acting pump you will need a tank that holds .326 gallons.

Formula: V = pi (r)2 x depth
Calculation: Volume of rod = 3.14*(1x1)*24 = 75.36 Cubic Inches.
75.36 Cubic Inches / 231 = 0.32623376623376623376623376623377 gallons

If you are using a single acting 4"x24" cylinder connected to a double acting pump you will need a tank that holds 1.3 gallons.

Formula: V = pi (r)2 x depth
Calculation: Volume of rod = 3.14*(2x2)*24 = 301.44 Cubic Inches.
301.44 Cubic Inches / 231 = 1.3049350649350649350649350649351 gallons

Being as the linked pump comes with a 2 gallon tank there would be more than enough tank capacity. As for speed, it should take slightly less than a minute to raise the trailer being as you need 1.3 gallons to fill the lower section and the pump puts out 1.4gpm@2500PSI. The only dump trailer I have run took at least 40 seconds to dump a load of wood chips, so that wouldnt be horribly slow.

Down time would depend on the flow backwards through port A.

I had a change in my hoist set up. Powerstroke444e mentioned it in his post but I guess I didn't fully understand what he was talking about. I now have the rear of my cyl. mounted about in the center of the tandem pointing toward the front of the trailer. The front of the cyl. is mounted about 2' back from the front crossmember. This means it is lifting 29" further forward than my first setup. As the cyl. extends and the box raises the cyl comes up in an ark . When the cyl is fully extended I have 58" of lift from a 24" stroke cyl. It also takes less air pressure to raise the box than the other set up.Thanks for the idea Powerstroke.

Looks like a good idea. I'm not sure why, but I had it in my head that the cylinder had to push to the rear. I like the fact that you are lifting the load closer to the front of the trailer with this set up. I am too far along with my trailer to change now, but this looks like a better way to do it. How are the ribs feeling? Greg

Over the weekend I took off the box frame and turned it upside down and finished welding the bottom. I also finished the lower cyl.mount. After that I figured while the box was off I would prime the bottom. Tonight I put the box frame back on and hooked up the cyl and gave it a try. Every thing worked! Then I started making some guide plates. There will be 3 on each side. These will make sure the box comes down centered on the frame.

Looking good and glad I could point you in a direction that could help you get it to lift more. I like how you reinforced the cyl mount. Hope it all works out and sorry I couldn't get a photo of mine but I was to lazy to move everything infront of it. I will get one once it warms up. I used the 2way pump that hooked on HP listed and it works great, if you need I think they will put a bigger resivor on it for a small amount.

How long does it take to dump your trailer. Using the calculator on SC's sit it will take almost a min. to dump. Or does the pump pump at a higher rate when less pressure is required.

I have a smaller cylinder on mine dump but I have seen same pump on a 1ton pickup and a large 16' gooseneck dump and it don't seem to be to much differant than the pto pump on the dump truck @ the farm. On my mine if its empty or light material it does go up much faster than with wet dirt.

Tonight I started working on the sides. I decided since the trailer ended being 70" wide insted of the 60" I originally planed on I would make the sides 12" tall. I will still be able to over load it and if I am loading any thing by hand I can easily go over the side. I need to figure out how long to make the tongue. The tractor is 5' wide and the trailer is 70" wide. I am going to have 1 tube come strait out from the center and one from each corner to the center tube. If it warms up this weekend I am going to roll everything out of the shop and do some cleaning. My shop is usually clean. Here are some more pics. The last pic is for those of you that enjoy raw power or that need something to show the wife that is more expensive to play with than tractors.

Tonight I got the tongue done. I made it 4' long. The angle braces were a pain to make. Then I capped the ends of the tubes that I needed to. Hopefully tomorrow I can finish the last few welds and finish priming what needs it. I ordered a 12V double acting hyd. pump today. I figured this would be easier than hooking and unhooking hyd hoses every load. If every thing works out I may get everything but the tongue painted this weekend. I am going to build a box on the tongue for the hyd. pump.

What's your plan for a tailgate? Are you going to have one?

I'm not sure if I am going to have one. I will give it a try as it is first. Unless I was hauling somthing lite like mulch I don't think I will need it. If I do need one I will build one with over slung hinges on top.

I was wondering if that would be the plan if you needed a tailgate. The only thing I would mention is, if you do decide to go with a tail gate, that with the short side walls - things can get stuck in the gate while dumping. You may need to put in a taller post at the rear for the gate to hinge on and allow a taller gate for clearance. That, of course, depends on what you end up putting in it too.

The build is looking great so far. I'm looking forward to seeing it when the bed is done.

Over the weekend I got all the welding finished. I changed my plan a little. I used 3/4 plywood for the floor and sides. I think the plywood will hold up fine with the liner. I got all the plywood cut to size and started painting. I hope I will have the hyd. pump by Wed. I am planning on mounting it on the tongue. I have to give the wood another coat of paint and the I can screw it down. I am using Tek screws to fasten it down.

I am waiting for my hyd. pump to show up and am trying to decide whether to mount it in a tool type box on the tongue or do somthing different.Between the battery and the pump I will be adding quite a bit of tongue weight. I also need to decide how big of a battery I will need. Do I need a deep cycle? I also thought about mounting a solar charger on it.

Solar seams like a good idea as you won't have to worry about putting a maintainance charger on it then...unless you end up storing it indoors.

Deep Cycle

Solar charger

Be sure to wire it to be charged by the truck when it's being pulled too.

I got just about every thing done. I do have to go back and touch up the paint and add grease zerks to the hinges. My hyd. pump arrived Friday. I bought a plastic tool box at BigR that it fits perfect in. I mounted the battery back between the axles. I have 130lbs of tongue weight now and didn't want to add another 30lbs.With the box raised I have 90lbs on the tongue. It took a while to figure out how to wire the remote since they didn't include instructions. I used uthf in the pump so it would be the same as the tractor. It takes 25 sec. to raise the box with no load on it and the same to lower. I used 3/8 lines from the pump to the cyl.I still need to build something to hold the remote so I can reach it from the seat. I was looking for a tongue jack on the auction site and they wanted $35-$40 plus $20-$30 for shipping. I found one at my local Farm & Fleet for $31. I am going to weigh it this week. I am guessing it weighs around 1000lbs. I was trying to think of something heavy I could set in the trailer to simulate a load and see how it raises. I don't want to wait for warm weather.
