I heard about this too. While I'm overrun with hogs, I do like to process a few of the small ones to eat. What concerns me is what if someone nearby poison them and ends up on my dinner table.

135 mg/kg-1 of sodium nitrite is a lethal dosage for a hog.
Sodium nitrite lethal dosage for a 143 lb person is 71 mg/kg.

Question: What does the "-1" mean on the mg/kg-1 ?

jinman; I think eating whatever sounds and taste good to you is the best thing. I know the oncology wards always encourage you to eat, and don't care what, as long as you keep eating. Chemo takes a lot out of you, as some of you know firsthand, and those that eat seem to do better than those that do not.

So ... I spend all day cutting hay and come home to SAUERKRAUT PIZZA .. I've got a suspicious feeling Cher has been in the Marquita's ... The glass ... The mix ... The tequila ... The lime .. The salt ... Oh life is good!!!

This is a new one for me, I have never heard of sauerkraut pizza and I am a sauerkraut fan. Sounds great. Is this a Texas thing?

FG & jinman--I second the motion to season your tomatoes with Bacon. When our tomatoes first started coming out of the garden I made BLT's for Denise & I for dinner one night. Best BLT's in the world with homegrown tomatoes..... Well, as she's finishing dinner I asked her if she wanted another. When they are that good there should be a 2 Sand. minimum. A pound of bacon is perfect for 4 Sandwiches. Another of her favorites is "Grilled Cheese and Bacon Sandwich" with Tomatoes in the middle......Let's see Cheese, bacon, and tomatoes, oh yeah.

Charlie, that sounds good, I have had the bacon and g cheese and it is awesome, tomato and bacon as well, both great "samiches". Since I quite eating "poke" though, no more for me:laughing:

Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn has just finished another study on heart disease which will be published soon. No changes for me. Yesterday my Cardiologist gave me the thumbs up on my annual, and next month I continue year two of the Century Study. Nothing like being in the middle knowing the decision you make will be the difference between life and death and then seeing results to really appreciate a plant based diet.

Nope it's my wife's thing ... She's been making them for yrs ... Be sure to drain the sauerkraut very well .. Add any ingredients you want and put it in the oven just like any other pizza

I'm not changing my diet either, TxDon. I am active and healthy. If you could allow yourself bacon, you would find that the bacon BlueRiver has raised to be absolutely awesome!!! Has me almost ready to try to raise my own!! Just easier to let him do it, especially after he had to go out in the cold to tend to the farrowing sows last winter!

Here is an article on nitrites that you might find interesting. Be careful about eating those veggies!
