We still manufacture aircraft, automobiles, caterpillar equipment, steel panels, computer chips, and many other high value products.
Do you feel that we have the capability to ramp those systems up enough to cover all of our wartime needs, if the need ever arises?
At that point domestic needs would be sidelined, just as they were during WWII.

I’m not knowledgeable enough to answer that question, but desperate times call for innovative solutions.

I bet everyone of those especially the ones using steel still rely heavily on foreign parts.

Not, I'm not arguing against that China doesn't produce quality, it's more of a wish to support western industry.
One of the ironies of your wish is that many Western Industrial leaders have no loyalty to Western workers. If they can make an extra buck by moving some production to the third world, they will abandon the Western worker in a heartbeat. It is a situation driven by corporate shareholders demanding a return on investment, our own desire for items to be as affordable as possible, and third world workers willing to do more work for less reward. We can complain about it about it all we want, but there ain't no short term solutions on the horizon to bringing past levels of manufacturing back to the West.

What may eventually happen (may take a century or so) is that the third world will raise their standard of living to ours (or ours might lower to theirs) and we will all be back on equal footing. Not saying that is necessarily good or bad, I'm just saying.

Metabo, I am quite pleased with it.

And every year that amount goes down and more & more goes to China.

Of course, this lack of dedication and loyalty works both ways. Employees seem willing to jump ship at the drop of a hat too.

Which is the never ending mistake of “putting all your eggs in one basket”
If covid taught us nothing, its that we need to be able to build our own needs here.
But we won‘t and will continue to suffer shortages or worse, be in a situation where we need something we used to produce and an unfriendly supplying nation wont let us have.
Yeah, during COVID It really helped America when Mylan decided to off shore production to India as the largest American maker of generic Drugs.

This book tells the story of how Jack Welch began the decline of industry in America by doing anything to improve the bottom line and keep stockholders happy.
Once the CEO of General Electric, at one time the most valuable company in the world, he began it's decline to the shell of what it once was.
Fascinating read, explains a lot of corporate culture that got us in the fix we're in today.
