It MAY simply be a case of what your purpose of (this) life is. Hence, you can't possibly compare one person to the next. Luck probably has nothng to do with it. I will NEVER win anything. It's simply not part of my program.

Could be as simple as being in the right place at the right time as some of my friends... my godsister could have answered phones anywhere as a 17 year old High School Student... it just happened to by Apple Computer and she was one of the first 200 hired by Apple... if that is not luck or good fortune...

When Dad learned I had been approached by the CEO of the local Hospital about an opening in Engineering he could not have been happier... I mean he was really over the top happy... I would have a job with benefits, pension, vacation... etc. ....

Pretty much the same reaction my folks had when I got this job. They are long passed, but last week, I was going through some letters my dad wrote to his sister that my cousin gave me. I mentioned how happy they were for me to get hired here and how happy I seemed at my new job. Fast forward 29 years, and I'm still happy with the job. Its the upper management and corporate policies that are so discouraging.

With the imminent takeover... all I am seeing is corporate red tape, policy and procedures.

The entire Hospital is cabled with Cat5e... absolutely zero issues ever... learned last week the first priority is to recable everything with Cat6

I don't see the cost/benefit... and I am the one that ran the 5e project way back when... we don't spend money without a good reason and when I asked the reason I was told it is their standard.

Staff is looking forward because they believe a lot of improvement will be forthcoming... the thing they don''t realize is the we the Hospital ultimately pay... either upfront or later... there is no free money.

Makes no sense at all. With all due respect, no wonder healthcare costs keep going up. Seems foolish.

I always look at the cost/benefit... simply not there as far as I can tell.

We also have a very reasonable service through AT&T that is grandfathered... they will bring in all new service at 5 times the price... it will be lightening fast or so I am told... we have never had any issues with speed.

Corporate has a mold that they replicate... same for all affiliates.

That makes sense when you have to administer multiple sites. You want everything to be the same so you don't have to keep multiple people trained and current on old technology.

As for Cat5e VS Cat6 VS Cat6A....

All will run 1G speed at 300ish'. Cat5e has a little more delay. Cat6 can run 10G, but only half the distance. Cat6A will run 10G the full 300+ feet.

In most installations I've seen, they've run Cat5e to the desktops and used Cat6 between the switches and routers. And you're probably limited in speed to lower numbers by your ISP for now. However, Cat5e is what, 15 years old? Cat6 costs about 30% more than Cat5 and Cat6A costs even more than that. Its all due to the twists in the wire being tighter so you use more copper. And don't forget that if its run through plenum space, that's even more expensive.

Yep... 16 years and plenum.

Old and new will be side by side by side for 2 weeks and then the old will be abandoned in place... lots of fire walls and lots of interstitial space.

Server room is through my office... noticed from the plan "My" office will be home to new racks and a new dedicated A/C for the my office and the server room.

I'm a big fan of abandon in place. If you pull it out, it usually kills something unintended!

The Cat5E should be right at home next to the 10BASE2 coax it replaced.

I was always tracking down connection issues... each floor had a loop and people would unplug a computer by accident or on purpose and the loop would go down.

I actually had to coach the person that would head IT for about 10 years... she was very good on the software side and programs we used... she didn't have a clue to mechanics of 10BASE2, power requirements, backup power and installing/removing hardware from the racks.

Start a rumour that CAT 7 is just around the corner.

Back in the Ninties I installed recording equipment in various courthouses with all manner of beurocratic BS. At one point, the Liason told me, it really didn't matter, as all this "NEW" stuff was being torn out and Video systems will be put in.

How Frustrating! The good news, is that this project allowed me to buy a shiny new JD 770!
