We have changed the norm so much over the last 30-40 years that what used to be extravagance is now expected. We are now all about instant NEVER delayed gratification.

It's the same here but possibly worse. Australian households have more debt compared to the size of the country’s economy than any other in the world. $2 trillion in unconsolidated household debt relative to $1.6 trillion in GDP. Cars, boats, McMansions etc and it's all on the never never.
When the interest rates go up, this country is in deep do do.

In this country fertility drugs are very expensive but they are given free to welfare women for compassionate reasons. Where is there any compassion for the tax payer? The people that dole out the money, have too much money and a secure rosey future. I think that is one big problem right there.

People now insist on kitchens that are bigger than our living rooms used to be (or is that a "Great Room" how stupid) and no one cooks much it seems. These look more like a restaurant kitchens.

I could fit my house several times into the attic space of some of the homes I work in.

And what's this thing about recessed lighting all around the perimeter of your house? What the helll is that for anyway?

One thing that is a constant in almost every country in the world. The politicians have NO PROBLEM spending other peoples money to keep themselves in power.

The 'western' world's last gasp of private and public, unsustainably credit funded, decadence.

"Some historians hold that the fall of Rome can be attributed to internal decadence."

Or you could equally say that the mark of a dying great empire, is general decadence and not necessarily the reason it falls.
It's part of the cycle of birth, wealth and death of an empire.

It's no surprise that things are so screwed up: everyone that knows how to run a government is either driving taxicabs or cutting hair.

Hey Bah Boh : :)

I cant' agree that your friend is doing himself or any one else a favor by getting the education he's getting.

Getting an education just for the sake of getting an education is useful to no one, not even he student, unless he does something with it. Learning, learning and more learning without a goal is just taking up someone else's seat in a college.

I know lots of 'professional students' who depend on everyone else to do day to day stuff for them as they know nothing but how to study. None of them can put their knowledge to any practical use. As someone told me, he's so smart he can't even tie his own shoes.

Well, he is not a professional student since he has a very good, sort high paying job. :D:D:D The classes he was taking as fun were not for a degree so he should not have taken a seat from someone needing the class.

Like many people, he went down a couple of different paths before deciding on what he really wanted to do in life, and by the time he figured it out, he had earned some degrees. He made some drastic turns in what he wanted to do and I suspect some of it was studying for a profession his FAMILY wanted him to pursue instead of what HE wanted to do. I have know some people who have fallen into that trap and not gotten out. He did. While some very smart people can't really function well, I have known many people like this, my coworker was NOT that way at all.

Later,
Dan

The recessed lighting makes the house blend in with the UFOs when the land in the nearby fields to drop off and pick up pallets....

Around here, it seems the smart kids leave and don't come back. It doesn't help that college tuition is very high here. I've got 2 nieces currently going to school out of state. Tuition in other states can be half what they charge here.

IMO, The root behind the decline of the work ethic of today's youth started long before they reached working age...
...I like to offhandedly say that it's all the fault of music videos, MTV etc., etc...but they just culminated it beyond reproach...it really started before then...

Growing up when I did (boomer) if a kid showed any disrespect toward an adult (even a stranger) and their parents heard about it...it was bad news for the kid!...these days it just the opposite...if an adult says something to a kid he sees acting up etc...it's more likely to end up having a negative impact on the adult citizen than it is the kid that was up to no good...(and the root of this is with the parents)...
...it boils down to just plain loss of respect for others and for the value of having to work for a dollar...

Time changes everything (it's like death and taxes, unavoidable)...and I'm afraid that America may never again be what it once was...!...hey...they canceled 'Ozzie and Harriet', 'My Three Sons'...what's next...

BTW...While waxing nostalgic...I'm curious if anyone else that grew up in the same era and watched the (made for kids) westerns that were usually on before the cartoons Saturday mornings have seen any of the old episodes (on RFTV) of 'The Roy Rodgers Show', 'The Lone Ranger' etc...just compare the (positive) morals instilled in the old shows and what is popular today...

The two shows I remember not wanting to miss early Sat. AM's were 'Tarzan' (the real deal) and 'Red Ryder'...

Change is not always for the better...!

Hmmm..... Michigan State charges double for out of state students. Indiana University charges triple for out of state. Ohio State is almost triple. Purdue is almost triple.

Unless they are changing their residency to the state they have moved to, they're going to pay out of state rates.

As a kid, I found Roy Rogers un-watchable. Pat was too stupid. And with all those bullets flying, Roy always ended up in a fistfight. Man, he was a lousy shot! And for a long time I couldn't figure out why they rode horses if there was a jeep around? If you had a friend like that Pat, you'd not take him on any more adventures after the 3rd time the bad guys got the drop on him.

I liked The Rifleman, and F Troop (oh, man, that's bad! ).

Who's to blame? Look in the mirror as a society. We have given the 20-30 somethings everything. Everyone got a ribbon for participation. No winner, all winners even if they came in last. It's entitlement at its best.
.

You got that right

And before they can drive... Take me here, take me there. Soccer games, basketball games, swimming, horseback riding...... Way too much.

I only remember a jeep in the later years of the RR show...didn't really watch that one as much as others...

...my main point was about the morals depicted in the story lines of the shows that were (mostly) written for a young (formative years) demographic...and even the prime time shows backed up the same values we were being taught/exposed to at home, school, sunday school (if you couldn't play sick!), boy/girl scouts, little league etc., etc...
...back then there were no provocative music videos or electronic games etc...back then the most controversial thing (deemed by some) for a lad might be...If you were really lucky when your dad took you to the barber shop there would be a copy of Playboy magazine laying around...and your only anxiety was that two chairs would open up at the same time...!!

As for slightly later time...I always liked Larry Storch (still alive, 93) AKA "Tennessee Tuxedo" (also on 'Car 54 Where Are You') before 'F-Troop'

As for: "...all the bullets flying..."...What was funnier, if you remember the show 'Sky King' ?...I don't think there was ever a bad guy (one in most episodes) that was ever subdued with more than one karate chop to the back of the neck...(out like a light !).

Just a trivial query (you mentioned bullets)...in the opening sequence of the old, original 'Superman' show...why does superman just stand there letting bullets bounce off him...but when the bad guy runs out of ammo and throws the gun at him...superman ducks...??

Are you saying the generation that will need to support our social security payments, as we did for those older than we are, may not be reliable?
