I asked a guy (one of our drivers/warehouse guys) if the fax went through in my office (I was outside looking at something). He came back and told me no, it didn't go through.

I go back in (important information) and look, sure enough the paper looks like it fed through the fax machine. I ask him if the paper fed through the machine, and he told me yes, he could see the paper feeding all the way through.

I then ask him why he told me he thought the fax didn't go through. He looks at me with a straight face and tells me "well, because the paper is still here, isn't it?"

I just looked at him somewhat dumbfounded.

He really thought that the paper would "teleport" over the line, and since the paper was still sitting on our fax machine, it couldn't of gone through.

I'm dead serious.

I am still amazed at how they get the ink through the phone.

Man have I had my share of this.
I get so peeved at my wife since she typically translates ALL distances into minutes or hours. We had a big discussion over it while driving on vacation when we first met. She had the map and was navigating and I would ask her how far to the next town and of course, she would say "about an hour." We were out in the middle of nowhere and no one around. Well, after much of this I finally slowed down to 25mph and asked "OK, how far it is now?" She had the gall to say "it's not getting any closer at this speed. How fast are you going anyway?" I replied ... "about 15 mins per hour." LOL ... she shut up so I guess she understood?

I had a customer buy a 5000btu window air conditioner to put in her kitchen. She called back complaining that it would not cool her kitchen. I told her it was too small, that she needed at least an 8000btu unit. She brought it back and got an 8000. Later, she phoned back again and said it still wasn't cooling her kitchen. I went out to check for problems. She had the unit sitting on the counter by the sink!

When i used to work electronic repair.. we had a few extra repair codes we tech's would write on tickets. The sales people got the tickets and would ring up the regualr codes for the customer when they picked it up. Occasionally we would have a new sales guy that would call back and ask what this or that code was.. here were my favorites:

DEU - Defective End User

DUI - Defective user interface

and the best..

TSTU - Too stupid to use

I worked in IT for a while back in the old days and when a person was TSTU a computer we kindly referenced it as "the problem was between the keyboard and the back of the chair."

And it's not just people who are dumb. Some computers are dumb too. I put a new keyboard on my computer once, then booted it up and a screen came up that said "Keyboard not found - Press any key to continue" Duhhhh

That is a subject that occasionally rears its head on DIY forums and altenate energy sites. It is amazingly difficult to explain to one of the 'tards just how an airconditioner (or refer for that matter) work and why it doesn't work in the middle of a room.

On the subject of driving distance/time. I navigate by both methods at the same time with more importance given to travel time.

Also the European conceptof distance. We have a german niece in Germany. She came to the states on visit to someone and thought we could meet her at the airport for a short visit. Airport is in Chicago, we are in Wa state. I was stationed in Germany for 6 years and being almost central I don't think there was anything on the continent more than 6 hours by car from my location...well, Western Russia would have been a stretch.
