pro welders probably like a 'better' process machine with more rod and polarity choics liek a dc machine offers...

Sure do appreciate all the useful input everyone has contributed here. May be a stupid question, but:

Suppose you plug in a 115 volt wire feed welder to a 20-amp GFI outlet? Does that eliminate or reduce the shock hazard? The welder I am considering will be mounted to a metal cart with rubber tires. Would connecting a ground wire bolted to the cart frame to a "made ground" rod driven into the earth be of any safety benefit over and above the GFI outlet?

I would say that should work it works on swimming pool pumps however they don't pull the current a welder does If I was going to do that I would go to a electrical outlet store and talk to them

You probly wouldnt ever have a problem with a ac machine anyhow as long as your not laying on the ground weldingwhile your sweating but if you do this type of work get a ac dc machine

And never never never hold your stinger and your ground in different handset once

/ Thinking about getting myself a welder, but... #66
I mean by the rod and the ground

/ Thinking about getting myself a welder, but... #67
And never, ever put the stinger in one ear and the ground on the other!

Sorry guys, need to liven things up just a little bit or I'll be too scared to weld again ...

Yeah and dont clamp the ground clamp on your tongue, as that could really hurt, let along put the stinger up your .....Come on stop scaring the welding newbies.. you aint gonna get killed by your welder unless you are stupid.. Just dont become part of the circuit:ashamed::ashamed:

OK, here comes my 2 cents.

A stick welder is much, much less expensive to buy and operate. There is not very much maintenance compared to a wire-feed. No gas bottles, liners, tips to replace, mechanical things going wrong, etc., etc.

Stick is very versatile for many farm welding tasks, including hardfacing. The little 200A inverter welders are light and do an excellent job even on heavy, thick metals.

110V welding is virtually useless on a farm. Running 220V to your shop should not be that much more expensive than running 110V wire. That leaves open the possibility of a decent air compressor, plasma cutter, wood saws, air conditioning :)D) and many other 220V tools. OK, so I'm dreaming a bit but if you don't wire it with 220V initially it will cost you much more later when your needs expand - and they will.

Several of the responders on here have the Everlast Power Arc 200 which is simple, runs excellent beads, is versitile, lightweight, and can be had for less than $300 with the TBN discount.

I have an Everlast PA200 and couldn't be more pleased. I use primarily for repairing farm equipment. Has paid for itself several times in the past year. Also Miller MIG and Lincoln gen/welder. Use the Everlast much more than the other two.

WOW...great first post from a newbie. Thanks and welcome to TBN.

I agree the talk about deadly zaps from welding is a bit much. I have a few times been welding in the rain, with wet gloves, and while guiding the rod with my hand, I felt a little tingle. I think this with with the old buzz box, cant really remember. Nothing came out of it. As long as the path isnt through your heart, your fine. (At least thats my understanding, I aint no doctor) I admit dc could be safer, since ac can cause the heart beat to get iregular, but either way, it isnt much of a risk. (if you use your head)

GFI might not work, may trip when you strike a arc from surge.

You don't know what your talking about welders can be very dangerous especially to a newbie they should know there are risks just like driving a car

Just use common sense:
Be aware that you are using electricity to melt metal. Do not make any part of your body part of the circuit.

Don't touch the rod while in the stinger with your bare hand. It will only make it worse if you are wet and/or well grounded.

Sweat is full of salt and make the water more conductive.

If you have to weld laying down put down a rubber mat or piece of plywood to insulate you from the ground.

Keep your leather gloves on when inserting a rod into the stinger.

It is not that dangerous. Use all the safety gear have a fire extinguisher close and don't weld near flammables.

While Im not saying there are no dangers, I am saying you are blowing it way out of proportion. All your doing is scaring people off. As long as you use your head, and dont do anything too stupid, you will be fine. Remember, for electricity to kill you, it has to go through your heart. There are many dangerous things in welding, almost all of them are more likely to hurt you then getting zapped.

If you remember correctly drivers Ed in school used drunk driving films to get the attention of new drivers because they were new . O trying to get across a point that may save sebodys life I'm not saying don't get one I think everyone should have one but don't think for a minute if your careless , ( as some people are it can kill you.

And it's not hard to use a dc welder instead of ac. I know pro union welders that will not even make 1 weld with av

And it's not hard to use a dc welder instead of ac. I know pro union welders that will not even make 1 weld with av [ac]
So none of those pro welders will TIG weld aluminum then? That's an all AC process (with only rare exceptions)....

Yes you are blowing this out of proportion. Proper care needs to be taken, but as long as you avoid puddles and other wet ground, you have removed most of the risk - AC or DC. The lower OCV of modern welders makes it hard to be electrocuted by a welder. Not impossible, but not easy to do...
