There will be wars and rumors of wars. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Since participating on this board I have heard that Kubota was going out of buisness. That JD was buying Kubota, that Kioti bought Kubota, that Kubota was buying Yanamar, that Kubota owns Kioti, that Kubota copied Kioti, that Kioti copied Kubota, that both Kubota and Kioti were going out of buisness, that Kioti was made in Japan, that Kubota was made in Korea and Kioti was made from left over reject Kubota parts /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif and bla, bla--bla,bla-blababla.

I've had a hard time understanding how anyone can can say "buy american" these days. Honda, Kubota, Toyota .... all have plants here and employee real american workers, american managers, etc. They pay taxes the same as GM or Ford. The only difference is the company owners nationality. As a hard working american I spend my money where it give me the most for my hard earned dollar. I could car less about which big wigs pockets the profits line. ....but thats just me.

Why would the same tractor cost a dealer in New England more than a dealer in Kansas? I saw someplace in a thread that shipping might be a factor, but I don't think so. Japanese Car Manufacturers started the trend of averaging the delivery cost so that dealers across the country got the same cost, regardless if you were a mile from the boat or all the way across the country, and the Americans quickly followed suit. One thing that does factor in for a car dealer's cost is the number of units he orders. The more units, the more incentives he gets back from the manufacturer. I have heard that some dealers get as much as 50% off of invoice on some units. Another factor is the interest the dealer is paying on his inventory. Most dealers don't have the capital to buy the units outright and have to borrow the money to maintain an inventory...that figures into the cost of each unit...As for tractor dealers, I would be surprised if their business plan was much different, but I really don't know....it might be. But, I find it hard to believe that one dealer would have to pay more for the same unit as another dealer considering all other factors were equal. That would make no sense for Kubota or the dealers.

This was being done long before any foreign car companies were selling cars in the USA. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Location, location, location!!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I must agree that dealers are in business to make money, period! The list price of a tractor is the same regardless of the location. Yes, overhead varies from place to place but as a consumer I'm not willing to pay an owner of a dealership to drive their caddy's or pay for their new poolhouse because of them over inflating their prices. So yes, I'm shopping price and if the local dealer can't come "close" to an out of state dealer well that's their choice. So I must weigh the decision to buy local or out of state. Out of state may have better prices but do I want the hassle of pick-up/delivery? Maybe, maybe not! In the end, if the local dealer feels like he's getting strong armed then I could care less. But then again I'm not the type of person that expects a local dealer to match an out of state dealer. In addition, NO dealer is going to sell a tractor and lose money. Yea, he may not make the full margin but if he sells me a tractor he definitely is NOT GOING TO LOSE money. I bought from my local dealer because of price and reputation. The dealerr has been in business for 50 years and at 78 years old he still shows up everyday. His sales force (2 people) are both in their 50's. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Junkman,

Are you speaking of all products or just the car business? I had read that the Japanese where the first to use this practice in the car industry, but hey, can't believe everything you read.

dfeck,
How right you are. A dealer will not sell you something if he is going to lose money and a dealer's reputation is just as important as price. When I first started to shop for a Kubota, the nearest dealer was 100 miles away, and he tried to sell me a used tractor for more than another dealer was selling a new one. As I got down to the time to buy, low and behold, a new dealership opened up locally. I went there immediately to check it out. Now, I don't know about what works for most of you, but when I enter a dealership for the first time...regardless of car, tractor, or whatever...I always act like I know nothing about their product. I want them to walk me through it all. This shows me two things, how much they know, and how much I don't know. I always take the wife too, but that is for a different reason. Anyway, this new dealer started out okay, but quickly started a rap that sounded more like a shady used car salesman than a tractor dealer. His BS also had a ring of familiarity that I was trying to place. When we got to price, he was way out of line with everybody else's quotes, except for the next closest dealer. Come to find out, that dealer owned both dealerships. I ended up having to travel a fair shake to get my tractor, but the dealer has been around a long time and was straight from the beginning (made 5 trips there). His price was not quite the best, but was close enough for me...

I was referring to the U.S. auto industry. I believe that it was the Teamsters that originally came up with the idea of single price shipping because they were loosing out on car shipping that was done close to the factories. With the single price shipping cost, they made more money because they got paid the same for hauling every car no matter where it was going. My guess is that this happened in the later half of the 1960's. Possibly in 1967? Another thing that came into play was the Government requiring the auto manufacturers to put window stickers on cars, because prior to the window sticker legislation, you never knew exactly what a car should cost. Dealers were free to make up any "list price" and then sell from that. I believe that window stickers came about in 1957 or 58. It is unfortunate that there is so much "revisionary history" being circulated today, that distorts the true facts. I have a friend that is married to a woman that was born in a foreign country and as a child, she was taught that the electric light bulb was invented in China!

"I got a whole lot more tractor for less money with my CK20."

I don't know what you paid for your CK20, but when I bought my BX22 last year, it was $4,000.00 less than a comparably equipped CK20.

Freight cost are not averaged in the tractor world. They are zoned the farther away from port of entry the more you pay for freight at least this is what NH does.
