Harvey,

I get it now. I was getting confused about the forked entrance, Don's entrance, Jim's photoshop and the two locations. No wonder you are slowly tearing yourself apart!!!! LOL

Harv,
REAL intersting watching your projects. I had a thought looking at them, that it would be nice to brand that top limb that goes across with something like "Home Sweet Home" Instead of having to make several brands you could coe up with a generic one that you could use on all your gates. Now I knwo it is to late since the beams are already up there, but I think a brand would look kind of cool.

I guess you've got your branded piece of cedar. (laugh)

I'm going to band the posts together and the top rail to the posts with metal strapping. I'm going to hammer the strapping to give it an aged look. And I believe I'm going to figure out a signature I can hammer in to the strapping to identify my work.

Okay, Harv. You've had enough time to build the gates and we want to see an update with detailed pictures of the hanging and all. I want to see how the powder coating came out. My last gate was 15 feet and sagged less than 1/8 of an inch so the pressure is on. ;)

Gary, thats a fine looking gate. Who did you use for Powder Coating. I have not had time to look and find some one local. I have a small project I want to do in the next several weeks and will need a powder Coater.

Thanks
James

Harvey, I am going to have to start screen your projects from Barb. LOL You gave here some ideas for the ceder we now have around our house. Looking good.

What are you guys using for hinges on these heavy custom gates?

MF1455v,
I sandblasted and painted my gate with Imron (Dupont). Maybe I just didn't find the right powder coater, because they were all way too high. I picked up a business card at Mo's BBQ the other day. It's a powder coater in Liberty Hill - Diamond Powder Coating, Dave Hansen @ 512-778-9345. Next time I have something, I'll give him a call. You do the same and let me know what you find.

Ultrarunner,
They are barrell hinges from King Architectural Metals (I buy at their Dallas wharehouse). Get the 7" USA made. They run $25 a pair for the imports and a bit more for the USA. The USA seems to have stronger welds. They have a large ball bearing and grease fittings.

These are the only ones I use on the big gates. They're sealed bearings and they live over time.

The only other ones I use are the Counsel bearing hinges sold at King Metals.

I've replaced too many barrel hinges over the years to use them for any reason. They're steel barrel and steel pin so they rust up easy. This is exaggerated because most people put them on wrong and they won't take grease.

I use these for small gates and stuff like hinges on smokers etc. They come in different sizes. What makes them neat and allows them to live long is they have a brass pin and washer so they never rust up.
