Knowing me,,,, I'd build a carrier that would withstand the capacity of the hoist. Because at some point I'm going to lift a heavier item than the original intent. :)

Agreed, I keep going back to this.................

The weakest point of the system should be the one that would do the least damage if it failed.

Yep. And for me, that's the winch.

My imagination has been triggered by this project. What he needs is a metal beam spanning the shop, sitting on two posts of sufficient strength. Then use the beam as a track and construct a roller system for the winch to be held on. Then it's uses could span the width of the shop. Now we're talking!!!! :)

Looking at portable ones, I think I would be good with one 10 foot wide between posts to fit jeep, truck etc. for loading/ unloading.

Yes. I want one of those for my shop.

My rollup doors are 10ft wide. If I had one 12ft wide it could be stored straddling a doorway and take up very little floor space!!!!

Keep us posted on your decision and progress!!!! :)

That's exactly what I am considering for a shop addition. I beam sitting on square tube posts, with a beam trolley and a 1 ton hoist.

Richard is correct, if your looking at lifting other things then I would do a rolling gantry crane or similar , the idea I gave was only for lifting the jeep top or tent. That's the only thing my buddy and I use ours for, we also store our tops with the system when it's off, keeps the tops up and out of the way.

How wide is that shop? Looks like 28'

I agree with others, dont hang anything from the trusses. Your trusses werent designed and engineered for that. Do you have any of the specs of the trusses, and what loading design they were built for? Everytime I have ordered trusses, They ask alot of questions, like what roofing material is gonna be, any ceiling attached to the underside, etc. They really build them about as light as they can get away with.

I'd get a 28' beam, sufficient to span the width of the shop, mount on two columns, then hang the hoist from that. Would you have a way to hoist and set a 500# steel beam in place?

What is the specs of that hoist? What does 750/1500# capacity mean?

Assuming its a 1500# capacity, and 28' span.....you would need a minimum of a W6x25, W8x21, W10x19 for a beam.

IF its only a 750# hoist spanning the 28'.....you would need a minimum of a w5x19, w6x15, w8x13, w10x12, s6x17.25. s7x15.3 beam.

totally understand and agree. My main idea was to lift my roof top tent, but we all know it could be used for various other items in the future if it was done right like others suggest with a crane type system........
