Throttle for shuttle shift

I always use the foot throttle. I hardly ever use the hand throttle.

3R, you can probably deduce from my recent thread my motivation for doing this today: "I wonder if I can make my tractor HST-like and not make myself want a new one!"

LOL. Imagine my disappointment to realize I'm not a genius and am in fact just using it how it was meant to be used.

I grew up on tractors and still find I have a learning curve when going to a different type of tractor. As the hours pile up, you will find what works best for you.

As to not wanting a new tractor, good luck with that as for many of us it never ends.

I see no problem to the engine using the foot throttle to change rpm.

I like the fact you can use your right foot to control the engine speed, let off it slows down. With the hand throttle you have to move it by hand to change rpm up or down. When using the loader I like to be able to have my right hand free for using the joystick. My right foot can take care of the throttle.

Now if I was doing something that required a steady engine rpm I would use the hand throttle. Loader work does not fall in this catagory.

Yep that's why the foot throttle is on gear tractors, When I had a gear tractor, I always used it a lot. Especially doing loader work or driving in the woods. Now when mowing of course just set the hand throttle and go.
But seriously, you still need to come on over to the "dark side" you know you want to.:laughing::laughing: I am just kidding, if your gear tractor is doing all that needs done, it is fine. Good luck and enjoy your tractor..

P.S. my offer to play with the HST still holds though.

James, next time I visit my grandparents in Branson, I'm going to plan to pay you a visit. I'll give you plenty of notice so hopefully it'll work out. It's really generous of you to offer!

Unfortunately my next tractor will have to be a HST as my left knee is starting to give me a lot of problems (pain) and if I'm doing a bunch of loader work by the time I get off the tractor I can barely stand.

Also someone asked if reving up the engine to a higher speed and leaving it there to change between forward and reverse would be a problem. I believe it would be a matter of technique and tractor brand. On mine it's not a major problem as mine has a wet clutch. I my case depending on gear I might grind some if I try and change to fast.

On my JD 3320 with a reverser tranny, i clutch when using the reverser. Seems to be real smooth. Just a matter of clutch throw reverser lever and let out clutch, very quick and no jerking motion even at pto rpm.....

I do the same thing when mowing and need to make a tight turn. I slow down to an idle finish the turn and then speed back up to 2000 rpm. I'm fairly certain it's hard on fuel economy, but I don't think it will hurt a diesel engine.

Here's a related question that I can't find in search (iPhone again). Can I shift my crash box tranny on the fly? I know the manual says not to, but that doesn't make sense to me. Seems that if I match gear to RPM it should slide in nice and easy. Obviously I haven't tried this.

(I only mean forward gears, not forward-reverse)

What about high and low ranges? Can I shift those on the fly? Can HST tractors do it?

I wouldn't suggest "dry shifting" a crash box. But I've never tried it. Just shifting a manual tranny car without the clutch takes some good timing and a lot of familiarity with the vehicle. And the car has synchros, which I don't think the crash box has.

In my experience no not very well. occasionally you can match speeds and do it, but most of the time no. No on the range shifting, No on the HST either as they are not syncro either. Some of the more upscale hydrostats have a high low that can automatically shift on the fly, Kubota HST+ and the New Holland has the Turtle Rabbit switch but this is not swapping gears it is doing something inside the hydro. I think JD has something similar. My hydro does not have these features, but I seldom change ranges anyway. There are several good videos on you tube on Hydrostat + on the Kubota.

I have up-shifted with a non synchronized transmission, but no down shifting. Not shifting between ranges on any of our HST; don't know if this is universal.

I'm going to try it. Use foot throttle like a car, or just set and forget with hand throttle?

grind... grind....if you grind off a pound, send it on up and we can make coffee:laughing:

I grew up farming with a Ford 600 then later a 841 and did the throttle up and down as well as leaving it at a set RPM, did the same thing with a Case 995 and Massey Ferguson.

I have never driven a tractor like yours.

On the Higher RPM Shuttle shifting...

I also set my rpm at around 1500 and shift back and forth( shuttle) ALOT when plowing snow. I use the foot throttle from 1500 on up to 2400( for the snowblower).I have done it this way for years and even did it with my old 79 ford 3500 even tho it didnt have a shuttle 2nd gear and rev lined up;)..I dont think it hurts them and i think the fact that the clutch isnt dragging as long shifting in this manner would cause less wear than "riding" the clutch..

As the original poster, (almost 10 years ago), I can say that I use the foot throttle almost exclusively when doing loader work. Sometimes if I am digging into a gravel bank I will set the hand throttle to 12-1300 rpms, to prevent stalling, and also use the foot throttle for higher rpms. When using the BH I obviously have to use the hand throttle. Bill C

Wow, I didn't even realize this thread was that old!

Cars didn't always have synchro transmissions. Double-clutching was the usual method of matching engine to gear speeds. A good operator who knew his machine well, could nail shifts without noticeable grinding 9 times out of 10 (more or less;)).
