Tiller -- acres per hour??

Wow! Thanks so much...excellent replies. I get the sense that if I had a chance to buy a tiller, it would replace plow, discs, and harrows, give a better job, and do so at a reasonable pace for my pasture maintenance. Not to mention great for gardens, final landscaping etc. I did not realize they could be used so well for acerage. Thanks again.

I guess one thing I should say about disk vs tiller is that if you have a field that is already just dirt, that is, not hard and packed with vegation, a disk will go through it fast and do a pretty good job of loosening it up. In this situation the disk can be faster if the soil is decent. Otherwise the tiller is superior.

If you ever get on a treadmill and set the speed to 5mph, you'll have to jog to keep up - 3mph is a good pace and anything over 4mph requires jogging unless you're an accomplished speed walker...

No need for a treadmill.... I've been working on the same thing. 72" tiller, JD 4400, I run in 1st gear, A range, about 1.5 mph. My only problem is rocks, lots of rocks. My poor tiller has been taking a real beating. I have to stop and un-jam the tiller from time to time and I'm sure the people who live near by don't really like the noise.... Good luck.

Great question! I'm glad you asked. I'm really interested in a tiller now. Recently harrowed 2 acres and had to make 3 passes. In the areas that had bermuda, the discs never really broke through. I was thinking about using poison, but it sounds as though a tiller is what I need. Maybe both? Also, I've heard that a tiller is a lot easier on your tractor.
