I don't think any of us could afford a fence that would totally exclude coyotes.

I agree. I've studied coyote predatory behavior and I should explain I'm actually trying to keep my dog in vs keep the coyotes out. He's a "hunter" and would chase any dog or coyote he saw on the property. Bad things happen if that takes place.

So I am trying to have a fenced area of the lawn adjacent to the house where he can enjoy the great outdoors during the daytime while I am working at the property, usually nearby. My wife would typically be in the residence during this time. I would not leave him unsupervised at night, dawn, or dusk. My experience is that if I am running a tractor or doing target practice during the day the coyotes stay away and I think a fenced lawn area (to keep him in) would be an effective solution. I want to try something as we have a beautiful large property but the dog can't go out right now without being leashed.

Grandparents used to board horses on there farm. In there later years they started boarding miniature ponies and donkeys. Never had issues with coyote and coy dogs till the minis moved in.

Minis got penned in the barn at night, but they still had close calls. Grandparents were half deaf so they couldn't hear if there was an issue. Neighbors would tell them the coyotes were serenading in the field below the barn.

When that happened, I would go up and stay a couple nights, and camp out by the barn. When they would get in close, I would hit the flood lights on the barn and thin them out.

I don''t really think a coyote will take on a dog - Lab, german Shepard, rottweiler, etc - one on one. I know for a fact that a group of 3 or 4 sure will.

We came down from AK in '82 with an 16 month old lab. The spring of '83 I watched as a female coyote - obviously in heat - came sashaying into my yard. I ran back to the house calling the dog - the dog became stone deaf - I couldn't get to my rifle soon enough - over the hill they both went to where three more were waiting. I sure as H-E-L-L hope they enjoyed their breakfast - he was a $900 lab.

Fencing to keep your dog within a certain area. Good friend had three knot headed, stubborn Ak Huskies - he installed one of those perimeter single wire burried electric fences and a few little red flags marking its location. Worked like a champ. Each dog had his own collar. After about six months of the electric fence - all he had to do was move the little red flags and the dogs would not go beyond the flags.

spray the fence lines. 12 to 24 of rock around your buildings that you can mow over the edge. seal your posts and gates to prevent rot. buy good equipment you can rely on.
