You guys with turfs, are you able to use your fel and tillers and box blades under most circumstances without problems or do u find you need the traction of the R-4's? I'm referring to medium duty work at most,
They're not THAT different ...unless/until they load up with something like clay or packed snow.
Rubber is rubber, dirt is dirt, etc.
Tread pattern doesn't make much difference UNTIL it gets filled in.
That will happen earlier in clay or heavy loam, especially when wet.
My tiller is forward rotating, so I don't need a whole lot of traction, it contributes a bit of push.
Box blade ? I don't remember having used it with the turfs on, but I don't use it as a a dozer anyway.
I do a lot of loosening with just the rippers before trying to move much dirt with it anyway, but I don't think it would be an issue.
An aside; I came across some "Olde Tyme" plowing data recently.
Just after WW I a dyno was developed to measure horse pull and tractive effort required for various farm implements.
It seems that a 14 inch single bottom plow run 6 inches deep in grass takes a 500 lb pull.
How much that relates to the weight of a draft horse (1/3 maybe, though BIG drafts weigh a lot more) and how much a horse can dig in is interesting.
There is an odd figure in there of the pull required to pull a 26,000 lbs "cart" that might be the origin of the CDL limit (-:
i.e. how many horses a teamster could handle and still be "safe".
Anyway, I think that all came to mind because weight on the ground is usually what limits draw bar pull and you can get a lot more ballast in a turf or R4 than you can get in an R1 Ag tire.
