Now, now, gentlemen... The US Government does attempt to recover these expenses, albeit to unsuspecting 'customers'.

My last posting prior to retirement was with the Defence Materiel Organisation, specifically in managing & purchasing electronic test equipment. The RAAF purchased a modest number of AEW&C aircraft which came, as an offered package, with a suite of 'high end' test & maintenance equipment. Costly but convenient.

However, a wee bit of investigation showed that all of this equipment was either obsolete or less advanced than what was available, the difference was that the maintenance manuals would need to be written to include the more advanced/capable equipment.

Buyer beware indeed. (Yes, we almost fell for that one)
