I finally got around to putting on my double ring tire chains on my 18.4 - 16.1 turf tires yesterday. I was disappointed to find the chain overlapped itself by almost three cross chains (didn't measure, maybe a foot and a half or two). The cross chains seem the right width, its just the length is too long. I got them from a local farm supply store and think they either loaded the wrong ones, or, just gave me too much (sucks to be the guy who got the short ones!).

So, i measured the length of the chain which comes out to about 10' 7" I'm thinking about shortening the chain myself since it doesn't look all that difficult if I can find the right cutting instrument. My question is, does anyone know or is there some sort of formula for figuring how long 18.4 - 16.1 tire chain should be? I could eyeball it, but much rather have a figure to guide me.

There is also the chance I don't know what I'm talking about seeing as how these are the first tractor tire chains I've ever had. I just don't see the reason why they would overlap so much.

thanks is advance!

They are not supposed to overlap. Maybe check with the supplier to see if they need to exchange and give you the right ones.

Otherwise, just put them on overlapped and measure where they need to be cut off. Be sure the cross chains are the length that you want them.

Might find someone local that knows tire chains to give you some pointers, too. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Have had similar oversize in the past. Not a big problem. Shortening is easy. As long as your width is correct you are in good shape. Other options include:

1. Return for correct length
2. If return is too troublesome, shorten

Shortening requires correct cutter and possibly cross link removal/repositioning. You should ensure cross link spacing is even around tire.

I dont' use the link binders anymore. I bought what looks like a mini-track tool ( basically a ratcheting chain shortener that holds the links in position until you can add "screwcap" chain link). This looks like a chain link with a hollow barrel on one side that is threaded to both ends of the link. Unscrew to open, place opposite chain ends inside and screw closed.

You hook the shortener two links behind the hook-up links, tighten it down and make your hook-up. Hope this helps.

Can you (would you) post a picture of the link binders you use?
Or post a link to the binders?
Thanks

I don't even remember where this thing came from, a yard sale I think. I built one for my buddy using a 4" turnbuckle and "s" links from the hardware store, which is where I got the "screwlinks."

The one I have looks like 2 mini claws and is like the clamp they use to pull the tracks of a tank/bulldozer together. Dig. Cam has been acting up, I'll see if I can get the darn thing working.
