Hey fellas. I have a friend with a chevy 3500 that's for sale. I am considering buying it as a backup for my F-350. The price is right. I believe it to be a 02-03 3500, king cab, dually, 8.1 gasser with the allison. It has the slanted headlights it that helps identifying the year. It has 70'sk miles on it. Can anyone shed some light as to the tow rating? It would be a backup to pull my 18k gtwr gooseneck. It already has a goose also. Thanks Robbie

12K for a conventional load distributing hitch and 15,500-15,600 with a 5th wheel hitch.

According to the '07 brochure, it states: 15,500lbs max trailer weight for an '07 3500DRW w/ 8.1L gas an 4.10 rears. 15,600lbs max trailer weight for 4x2.

Duramax you can add 1,000 to the 5th wheel ratings.

I'm not sure, but I think that truck is most likely rated for a 12,000 pound conventional trailer and 16,700 for a gooseneck or fifth-wheel. That's assuming a 4.10 rear axle ratio. So an 18k pound trailer might be a little over, but with good brakes and brake controller, might be OK.

You'll be pleased with that power plant and tranny. It's as good as the Duramax / Allison. I have the diesel and my friend has the 8.1 Dual wheel. He can hang with me every step of the way in any towing condition. I think the headlights dictate a 2003 model. Seventy thousand isn't a lot of miles for the 8.1.

Thanks, Yes I thought it would be over but it would be a backup. I'm killing my 350 slowly, and it's been in the shop for a turbo and I think I broke a pin in the transmission Monday. So it gets to go back all with only 83k showing. A medium duty is in the future but trying to get there on a budget. The 08 F-450 superduty looks good but for the money the 4500/5500 GMC/Chevy's are hard to beat. But for know if I can't get the tractor to the job no work. So For know I think the 3500 would be a sound addition. Plus it's clean as a whistle. Thanks again. Robbie

I don't think it's as good. The fact that GM sells more DMAX than 8.1's at $6,000 more proves it. Compare torque, fuel consumption or engine longevity to the 8.1L and you'll know what I mean. LOL
