Scruffy, that's true, the real counterculture types go with Linux. The Mac is almost passe' compared to Linux.

Each type seems to work for someone, I just can't get past the fact that almost everytime I am near someone with a machine running Windows they can't seem to figure out how to turn off the annoying modem internet connection sounds. One fellow was looking at my Mac once on the internet and was shocked there was no modem sound. ( I told him Mac's don't make that sound /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif) Either Mac users are a lot smarter or the machines must be easier to figure out? I have my fireproof suit on...

just kiddin' I'm just glad we can all communicate on this board.

Speaking of Ie, Netscape etc., did I hear something that said the next version of IE won't support Java anymore and will make viewing Java coated websites impossible or difficult? Is Java from Sun, MS's lawsuit opponent?

Del,

I'm using IE 6.0 with Windows XP and have had little trouble using it. A couple of sites have some errors coming from badly written pages. Certain HTML markups seem to be strickly enforced now.

My wife works as a merchandiser and enters all of her reports via java applets from a web browser. She was told not to use IE 6.0 until the company certified that it worked with their java code. For grins, she logged on using my machine and it worked like a charm.

Be adventurous!!! Using new software is like operating a tractor on a 15% grade. Just got use a little caution. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: Modem Sound

Del,

It is the modem that makes the sound...NOT the PC. The silencing is all done via the init string sent to the modem. I'm sure if you fiddle with the init string or modem settings, you too can have sound coming through your modem as well.

Java was/is written by SUN. M$ is modifying the JAVA in XP to be different, and allowing users to script programs ONLY usable in M$ products...hence the lawsuit from SUN. Only M$ would have the nerve for blatent piracy of someone elses product....but then what they are basing it on is an antiquated version that they have a license from SUN for. It still boils down to the principle of trying to lock users into only MicroShaft.
I have both Linux/Mandrake 8.1 and Wincrud 98SE currently, but as soon as I find a few more programs to replace some windows ported stuff, windows will be history as far as I am concerned.
I don't consider it 'counter-culture', I consider it a matter of protecting my privacy and right of choice, NOT what is crammed down my throat, no matter how impalatable it may be. Windows is nothing but an open invitation to virus and other intrusions to your system.
SEE: http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-200-7462087.html?tag=owv for artical on the lawsuit, and the reasons for it.

Re: Modem Sound

gatorboy

yes I can allow the modem sound to be heard, but it is the control panel in the internet and modem software that controls it. It's just a click on or click off procedure. I turn it on if I am having trouble connecting to see where the process is breaking down. I just don't know how people can stand to hear that junk constantly for no reason.

scruffy,

My definition of counter culture is not following the sheep herd. What would it be like if 90% of us all had the same model of the same tractor.

Apple has a neat practice of coming out with new systems that render your old software (that you often love and works great) unuseable or prone to crashes. To make sure you are screwed, they will come out with new models that won't run with older systems. Many times the software company can't afford to change their product or is out of business. I've copied my software from the orignal disks on to zip disks and store them in different locations. Hoping I'm turning to dust before they do!

Ostensibly these system and machine improvements are to improve things, but I see nothing faster about Mac OS 9 then OS 7. At this point the machines Mac or anything else don't need to get faster. If I can load and manipulate a full screen picture in Photoshop in the blink of an eye, do I really need to do it in half a blink? I suppose the 1,000,000 record database files that big companies have always need the speed but I'll bet the majority of us will never see any difference.

You've got that right del. Reason I don't have a faster cpu than I do, is between the memory's capability and internet, it doesn't do any good anyway. What I have will last me for home/work use for the forseeable future. Time it doesn't, well, I probably won't care anyway.
I just can't see Microsoft's trying to dictate what we will use, how we will use it, and to let them have access to all my private information. Ain't none of their business.
For the PC users, I think you will see a tremendous move away from MicroSoft products over the coming year or so. More programs will be ported for Linux, and more manufacturers will be preloading PCs with Linux. Due to the limitations in some of the programs I use, I am stuck with running some windows based programs until they get ported over. I am getting ready to try one of the windows emulators with a few programs to see how well it works...if successful, then I'll probably switch entirely.
You will see a steady erosian of M$ market share in the near future...already has dropped 5% over the past 6 months or so.
