Tractors and wood! Show your pics

Here's a couple pictures of my old Massey Ferguson. Haven't taken too many pictures moving wood. However I just purchased a 70 acre woodlot, so should be lots of photo opportunities this summer. I'd really like to get a pto winch setup like some of you guys for skidding.

What's that tail? An old tractor rear end with a winch to lift the log? How is the winch powered?

That looks like some nice ground clearance on that MF tractor, Ssrider. The winch has been a winner for me. It has really increased my reach in the woods and lowered the amount of hand labor I need to do to get to the wood. You may also find a self-releasing snatch block a valuable aid: you can pull around corners without having to walk back to release the cable from the pulley.

This picture shows one I bought from Labonville years ago. They no longer sell this design. I can't remember who the manufacturer of this one is, but it works well:


Here's another style sold by Portable Winch Specialists: US made self-releasing snatch block. I also own one of these. (It's rare I need two of them. At the time it was being sold at about half the price of competing models, and I couldn't resist.) I like it a lot, but I did have one problem with it: my 3/8" cable managed to pull down behind the pulley. It jammed so hard I had a bear of a time getting it back out (and kinked the cable). It's a great design, however, and a simple modification will avoid that problem in the future. See description in this thread: Jammed cable fix.

Ya it definitely has some good ground clearance. Those self releasing snatch blocks do look like they would be a huge time saver. What brand of winch do you have on your tractor? I haven't been able to find any used ones locally around me.

Not much wood, but I would tear up the timber if I got serious about it. I've only had the tractor for 72 hrs so far, and it's muddy and covered with horse manure when I took this wood run just for fun. The axe is kinda special too, for those that care about such things.

It's a hand winch (the only new bought part) mounted on a Frankenstein assembly A 28" wide tractor front weight bracket (auction) serves as the cross piece. It's mounted to the tire/wheel units (same auction) by jeep grand cherokee front wheel bearings, axle stubs, & some custom made adapters. It hooks to the 3 pt. via old style bumper pull car towing hitch (garage sale) to move it into position.

How does the tractor do pulling a load like that?

That log was ~2100 lbs. The log mover is probably another 750 (tires/wheels are 300# each). The little ford moves them, not fast though in range 2 low gear @ 1500~2000 RPM. The front got a little light when pulling the log mover wheels through some thick mud. With one hand playing the throttle and the other in position to dump the 3 pt not much input was going into the steering wheel at that point anyway
